Spark plugs, checking connections and ignition distributor caps

            0

The following special tool is required: Spark Plug Wrench, which is available at an affordable price in the store. car accessories dealer.

Additionally, it is recommended to purchase a special clamp, for example, HAZET 1849, which facilitates the removal of spark plug tips. It is necessary to buy the following replacement parts: Depending on the number of engine cylinders 4 or 6 spark plugs respectively. Standard spark plugs are shown us. 52.

Attention: Removing spark plugs for engines from 9/94 see p. 51.

Withdrawal

Engines up to 8/94

Remove the tips of all spark plugs while pulling only on the tips, not on the wires. The said special clamp facilitates this operation.

If possible, blow out the spark plug niches with compressed air so that when the spark plugs are removed, dirt does not penetrate into the cylinders through the threaded holes.

Unscrew the spark plugs with a spark plug wrench and check their condition. The presence of some experience allows us to draw conclusions about the operational state of the engine by the appearance of the spark plugs. The following rules apply here.

Electrodes and insulators:
  • have a gray color - the correct operation of the spark plugs and the correct composition of the combustible mixture
  • are black - the combustible mixture is too rich
  • have a light gray color - the combustible mixture is too lean
  • oily - misfiring at the corresponding spark plug or poor sealing action of the piston rings (check compression)

Examine spark plug insulators for signs of electrical leakage. Current leakage appears as thin uneven traces on the outer surface. If traces of current leakage are found, check if the tip of the spark plug is cracked, if necessary, replace the tip.

Installation

Use a feeler gauge to check the distance between the spark plug electrodes.

With new spark plugs, as a rule, the distance between the electrodes is set correctly, see p. 52.

The gap between the electrodes is adjusted by bending the mass electrode. There is a simple and practical tool for this. In its absence, you need to tap on the ground electrode from the side. When bending the electrode, lean with a small screwdriver on the edge of the threaded part of the candle, but in no case on the central electrode, because. it gets damaged.

Clean the spark plug threads with a clean cloth.

Screw the spark plugs into the cylinder head by hand until it stops.

Attention: Do not distort the candles.

Tighten the spark plugs to the correct torque. Spark plug tightening torques: ONS engine - 25 Nm; DOHC engine - 20 Nm; V6 engine - 40 Nm; engine with a displacement of 2.9 l V6-24V - 30 Nm.

Fit the spark plug tips according to the firing order of the cylinders. Operating order for 4-cylinder engine: 1-3-4-2; operating order for 6-cylinder engine: 1-4-2-5-3-6.

Check by rocking in different directions the strength of the fit of the lugs and high voltage wires.

Checking electrical connections

Check the reliability of all electrical connections at the ignition coil, as well as at the ignition distributor.

Replace cracked terminals.

Remove the ignition distributor cap and wipe it inside and out with a clean cloth.

Clean rusty contacts with a wire brush or needle file, spray with contact spray if necessary.

The contacts must not be wet, spray them with contact spray if necessary.

Bend high voltage wires by hand with a small radius and make sure that there are no cracks in the insulation. Replace wires if cracked.
