Visual inspection of oil leaks (Scorpio 2)

            0

If the engine has high oil consumption, it is necessary to find the places where the oil is leaking. To do this, check the following places:
  • Open the filler cap and check the seal for porosity and damage.
  • Ventilation hoses from the filler cap to the air filter.
  • Cylinder head gasket.
  • Cylinder head cover sealing gasket.
  • Cylinder head gasket.
  • The place where the ignition distributor flange is connected.
  • Oil filter seal oil filter on the cylinder block flange.
  • Drain plug (sealing ring).
  • Oil pan sealing gasket.
  • The connection point between the engine and gearbox (oil seal on the flywheel side or the gearbox drive shaft).

Caution: A leak in the front area of the engine may be caused by the crankshaft cover and/or intermediate shaft bolts being tightened to an insufficient torque. In this case, tighten the bolts to a torque of 15 to 20 Nm.

Since when there is a leak the oil usually spreads over a large area, it can be quite difficult to determine the location of the leak at first glance. When searching for leaks, it is advisable to proceed as follows.

Wash the engine. Spray the engine with a standard cleaning agent and after a while wash everything off the engine with a stream of water. Cover the ignition distributor and generator with polyethylene film beforehand.

Sprinkle the joints and seals on the outside of the engine with chalk or talcum powder.

Check the oil level and top up if necessary.

Perform a test drive. Since the oil in a hot engine becomes liquid and therefore leaks out faster, it is recommended to perform a test drive on a section of approximately 30 km on a high-speed highway.

Finally, inspect the engine using a lamp, find any leaks and troubleshoot.

Note: Oil leaks from the right side of the cylinder head gasket may be caused by leaks in the three lower rear intake manifold mounting studs. In this case, unscrew the 3 studs, clean the threaded holes and reinstall the studs with Hylomar sealant.
