Checking the brake system for leaks (Focus 1)

Examination

1.
NOTE: Brake fluid is water soluble and it is possible that all signs of a fluid leak have been washed away if the vehicle has been exposed to rain or snow.

Check the brake fluid level. Top up with brake fluid if necessary.

2. Apply the brakes several times and check that the pedal does not feel "soft". If necessary, bleed the brake system. For more information, refer to the Bleeding the Brake System chapter in this section.

3. Check the brake fluid level and see if the fluid level is actually dropping.

4.
NOTE: If the brake fluid level drops and no external leaks are visible, check the master cylinder face seal for leaks.

Locate and repair external leak.
