Checking the cooling system

1. When checking the cooling system, the engine must be cold, so all the following procedures should be carried out the day before the trip or at least three hours after turning off the engine.

2. Remove the radiator cap and rinse it thoroughly with clean water inside and out. Clean the radiator filler neck. If it shows signs of rust or corrosion. This means that you need to change the coolant (section 26). The coolant in the radiator should be relatively clean and clear. If it is rusty, drain it and replace it with new.

3. Carefully inspect the radiator hoses and smaller diameter heater hose. Check each hose along its entire length, replacing any cracked, frayed, squashed, cracks in the hose are more noticeable if it is crimped. Pay special attention to the hose clamps - in the places where they are attached to the elements of the cooling system. The clamp may puncture or pinch the hose, causing coolant to leak.

4. Make sure all connections are tight. A leak is usually identified by white or rusty deposits around the leak. If there are wire clamps on the hoses, it is better to replace them with screw ones

5. Clean the front radiator strut and air conditioner cooler with compressed air or, if not possible, with a soft brush. Remove all insects, leaves and other debris adhering to the radiator plate. Be especially careful with the cooling plates, do not cut your fingers on them

6. If the cooling system fluid level drops without any visible leaks, check the pressure under the radiator cap and in the cooling system.
