1. With the engine cold (at least 3 hours after turning off the engine), check the exhaust system, completely, starting from the engine and ending with the exhaust pipe. Ideally, it is better to do this when the car is overturned, so that you have free access to the system. If you do not have a tipper, lift the car on jacks and securely support it
2. Check the exhaust pipe and all connections for leaks, heavy rust and damage. Make sure all brackets and hangers are in good condition and firmly fixed.
If the pipe is black and sooty, or if there is a lot of plaque on it, then the engine needs a tune-up, which includes an inspection of the fuel system and its adjustment.
