Ford Focus is a car in the C-class segment produced by Ford since 1998 to the present day. During its history, the car has undergone three generations of development. The British magazine CAR considers it one of the 50 greatest cars of the last 50 years.

Focus is a very popular car - in Europe it is among the top 10 best-selling cars, and in Russia it was the best-selling foreign car in 2010, and in 2012 the best-selling car in the world.

The closest competitors of the Focus are cars of other brands, such as the Citroen C4, Hyundai Elantra, Fiat Bravo, Honda Civic, Renault Fluence, Kia ceed, Opel Astra, Skoda Octavia, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Auris, Chevrolet Cruze, Mazda 3, Lada Vesta, Mitsubishi Lancer, Nissan Almera, Peugeot 308, Renault Fluence and Volkswagen Golf.

First generation

Ford introduced the first Focus in 1998 in Europe as a replacement for the model Escort. The first generation was produced until 2004. In 2002, a restyling was carried out, which included updated headlights, bumper, radiator grille, center console, seats and an additional set of options.

Sales began in North America in October 1999 as a Christmas surprise to Ford CEO Jacques Nasser.

Focus was produced in various body modifications - 3-door hatchback, 5-door hatchback, sedan and station wagon. The transmission is available in three versions - 4-speed automatic, as well as mechanical 5- and 6-speed. There is a wide choice of engines - petrol: 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 liters, as well as diesel with a volume of 1.8 liters.

According to EuroNCAP, Focus received 4 out of 5 stars for driver and passenger safety, 2 out of 4 stars for pedestrian safety.

Second generation

On September 23, 2004, the second generation Focus was presented at the Paris Motor Show. It was produced from 2004 to 2011.

The size of the car has become slightly larger, both in terms of wheelbase and overall length, width and weight. The rigidity of the body has been increased by 10%. At the same time, the new suspension design has improved the car's handling.

New technologies have not been left aside in this generation - KeyFree technology, adaptive headlights, Bluetooth phone connection, voice control for the audio player, phone and climate control. The style of the car has the same design source as in the models Mondeo and Fiesta.

The car's safety was awarded the highest score by EuroNCAP, with 5 stars out of 5 for adult protection, 4 out of 5 for child protection and 2 out of 4 for pedestrian protection, outperforming competitors in this segment Opel Astra and VW Golf.

The body was produced in five versions - 3- and 5-door hatchback, 4-door sedan, 5-door station wagon and 2-door coupe-cabriolet. The transmission is available in four versions - 4-speed automatic, 5- and 6-speed manual and 6-speed PowerShift. Petrol engines Duratec with a volume of 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.5 liters and diesel Duratorq TDCi with a volume of 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 liters.

Third generation

Introduced in 2010 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit as a 2012 model. Produced from 2011 to the present. This model became "global", which means replacing the European second generation and the 10-year-old North American.

The most interesting technical innovations are the EcoBoost SCTi family of engines, the six-speed PowerShift preselective gearbox, electric power steering, side airbags, and airbag curtains.

The most interesting options are iPod connection via USB, active parking assistance, driver fatigue monitoring, low-speed collision avoidance, blind spot alert, lane departure warning, and road sign recognition.

The body is made in three versions - a 5-door hatchback, a 4-door sedan and a 5-door station wagon. Engines - petrol Ecoboost with a volume of 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.3 liters, petrol Duratec Ti-VCT with a volume of 1.6 liters and diesel Duratorq TDCi with a volume of 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 liters. The transmission can be mechanical and robotic PowerShift.

Fourth generation

In April 2018, the 4th generation Ford Focus with the code "C519" was presented. This year marks the 20th anniversary of this model. This car was mainly focused on the markets of China, Europe, and the Australian region, as demand for it fell in the primary markets. It is based on the Ford C2 platform, which is also used for the Ford Bronco Sport, Ford Escape, Ford Kuga, Ford Maverick, and Lincoln Corsair of the same years of production. The body has become 20% more torsionally rigid, and the weight has become on average 80 kg lighter. The body was produced in three forms - a 5-door hatchback and station wagon or a 4-door sedan.

Petrol engines were initially three-cylinder of the following models - 1.0 liter (998 cm³, EcoBoost, turbocharged, 85/100/125 hp), 1.5 liter (1497 cm³, EcoBoost, turbocharged, 150/182 hp) and 1.5 liter (1497 cm³, Dragon, 123 hp). Since 2019, a four-cylinder engine with a volume of 2.3 liters (2261 cm³, EcoBoost, turbocharged, 280 hp) has appeared. Diesel four-cylinder engines are available in two models: 1.5 liters (1498 cm³, EcoBlue, 95/120 hp) and 2.0 liters (1995 cm³, EcoBlue, 150/190 hp), all turbocharged. The transmission is a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic.

The model was updated in 2020. A mild hybrid drive with a 1.0-liter petrol engine became available, and some interior equipment was updated.
