Engines 1100 "BC" and 1100 "NS" are equipped with a classic type ignition distributor (with contact breaker) from Bosch (0 321 170 276, 0 321 170 282) or Lucas (418 34. 41 835).
Engines 1300 and 1600 are equipped with a Bosch (0 237 600 005, 0 237 600 003) or Lucas (418 37, 418 38) ignition distributor.
Every 10,000 km of mileage the following should be checked:
- the condition of the contact surfaces, on which there should be no traces of burning;
- the value of the inter-contact gap, which should be equal to 0.4-0.55 mm for Bosch ignition distributors and 0.40-0.59 mm for Lucas ignition distributors.
If there is significant burnout on the contact surfaces, the contacts must be replaced.
In addition, every 10,000 km or once a year, lubricate the camshaft and felt with engine oil, and clean the inner and outer surfaces of the distributor cap from dirt
The 1.6 XR3 engine is equipped with a transistor contactless ignition distributor sensor from Bosch 0 237 600 007 or Lucas 418 39, which does not require special maintenance.
Only the ignition timing angle setting is checked and, in case of unsatisfactory engine operation, adjustment.
Checking the ignition timing
The first check and adjustment of the initial ignition timing angle should be made after the first 2,500 km of mileage, and subsequent checks should be made every 10,000 km of mileage.
When checking the ignition distributor, it is also necessary to ensure that the vacuum and centrifugal regulators are operating normally.
CAUTION: To avoid risk of electric shock from high voltage, do not touch live ignition system parts with bare hands.
Spark plugs
Spark plugs with a conical seat, without gaskets. With a reduced-size housing. The length of the threaded part is 14 mm. Spark plugs are subject to inspection and cleaning every 10,000 km. To do this, unscrew the spark plugs from the cylinders, clean them from carbon deposits and, possibly, dirt. Check and, if necessary, adjust the spark (interelectrode) gap, replace faulty spark plugs.
The spark gap size (0.6-0.8 mm) is adjusted only by bending the mass electrode. To avoid cracking the insulating porcelain, unscrew the spark plugs only with a standard spark plug wrench.
CAUTION: Screwing in and out the spark plugs is done with a 5/8" (16 mm) long head wrench, not the 13/16" (21 mm) wrench used for normal spark plugs.
