Features of engine starting (Escort 3)

Engines: four-stroke, four-cylinder. petrol, liquid-cooled, carburetor (models LRA and L7 with the K-Jetronic fuel injection system). with a liquid-cooled system, with an overhead camshaft (model GLA with a side camshaft) Installed in the front part of the body in the engine compartment across the axis of the car Together with the clutch, gearbox and final drive form the power unit.

Starting a cold engine equipped with a Ford carburetor (with manual starting device)

ATTENTION: It is prohibited to warm up the engine at high speeds or with the accelerator pedal pressed all the way down.

Set the gearshift lever to neutral and apply the parking brake if necessary. Pull the choke control handle, located on the right side of the steering column under the instrument panel, all the way out.

NOTE: The carburetor of the XR3 engine is equipped with an automatic starting device and the above operation is not performed for it.

Turn on the starter by turning the ignition key to position III. If after 10 seconds of starter operation the engine does not start, return the key to position I. Wait a few seconds and repeat the operation. Do not press the accelerator pedal!

If after two attempts the engine does not start, perform the engine starting operation according to the instructions in section "Starting a flooded engine"



After starting the engine, release the ignition key and, slowly removing the choke drive handle, set the engine to normal idle mode. After warming up the engine, remove the choke drive handle all the way.

WARNING: Warming up the engine in a closed room is life-threatening - exhaust gases are toxic.

Cold starting of XR3 engine equipped with Weber carburetor (with automatic starting device)

1. It is not recommended to press the accelerator pedal while starting the engine.
2. After starting the engine, it is permissible to lightly press the accelerator pedal and maintain an increased crankshaft speed until the engine warms up and reaches normal idle speed.

Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it to position II. Wait 30 seconds and check the engine temperature using the temperature gauge. (If the engine is warm, start it according to the instructions in the section "Starting a hot engine.") Turn the ignition key to position III

If after 10 seconds of starter operation the engine does not start, return the key to position I, wait a few seconds and repeat the operation.

If the engine still does not start within 10 s, perform the engine starting operation according to the instructions in section "Starting a "flooded" engine".

After starting the engine, release the ignition key and it will return to position II.

Starting a hot engine with any type of carburetor

Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it to position II. Wait 30 seconds and check the engine temperature using the indicator in the instrument cluster.



Slowly press the accelerator pedal to half its travel and hold it in this position.

Turn on the starter and rotate the crankshaft until the engine starts. If the engine starts immediately, release the accelerator pedal and the ignition key.

If after three attempts the engine does not start, perform the starting procedure described in the section "Starting a cold engine".

Starting a flooded engine with any type of carburetor

If several previous attempts to start the engine have been unsuccessful, then the engine is probably "flooded". In this case, you should:

• push the manual control handle of the starting device air damper all the way down (for carburetors with manual control);
• slowly press the accelerator pedal all the way down;
• keeping the accelerator pedal depressed, turn on the starter;
• once the engine starts, slowly release the pedal as the crankshaft speed increases.

Starting the engine with an additional battery

• Turn off the ignition (set the ignition key to position I).
• Connect the "+" terminal of the auxiliary battery with the "+" terminal of the main battery with a wire. Connect the "-" terminal of the auxiliary battery with the "-" terminal of the main battery with a wire.
• Start the engine and ensure that it runs steadily at minimum speed.
• Disconnect the wire from the "-" terminal of the main battery and then from the "-" terminal of the auxiliary battery.
• Disconnect the wire from the "+" terminal of the main battery and then from the "+" terminal of the auxiliary battery.

CAUTION: To avoid damage to the transistor voltage regulator, do not disconnect the auxiliary battery while the engine is running in fast idle mode.

Starting the engine by towing

• Set the ignition key to position "II".
• Engage third gear.
• Pull out the manual choke control handle or press the accelerator pedal to half its working stroke.
• Disengage the clutch and begin moving the vehicle by pushing or towing.
• Release the clutch and start the engine.

Adjusting the working clearance of the valve rocker arms

Adjustment of the working clearance of the rocker arms on a new engine is carried out after the first 2500 km of mileage and then every 10,000 km of mileage.
