Disassembly
1. General
note: The 1.8L Endura-DI diesel engine is fitted to Focus vehicles beginning with Q1 '99 models. (1/4)
2. Remove the tapered roller bearings from the differential (1.8L Endura-DI diesel engine shown).
- 1. Install the special tool.
- 2. Remove the tapered roller bearings.
- Disconnect the speedometer worm gear (1.8L Endura-DI diesel engine) or vehicle speed sensor ring (VSS ring) (2.0L Zetec-E engine).

NOTE: Use a copper drift.
Disconnect the spur gear.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the spur gear by lightly tapping it.

Assembly
1.
NOTE: Do not apply oil to tapered roller bearings that are to be reused. New tapered roller bearings do not require oiling prior to installation.
Carefully clean and inspect all components. Apply transmission fluid to them before assembly.
2. Install the spur gear onto the differential. Tighten the bolts evenly, working diagonally.

NOTE: The speedometer drive worm gear or vehicle speed sensor ring must engage in the groove on the housing.
Press on the tapered roller bearing (1.8L Endura-DI Diesel engine shown).
- 1. Install the speedometer worm gear (1.8L Endura-DI diesel engine) or VSS ring (2.0L Zetec-E engine).
- 2. Press on the tapered roller bearing using a press and special tool.

4.
CAUTION: Do not use a tapered roller bearing as a support.
Install the tapered roller bearing (spur gear side) (1.8L Endura-DI diesel engine shown).
- Support the differential under the spur gear.
- Press on the tapered roller bearing using a special tool and press.
