Disassembly


1. General
Note: The 1.8L Endura-DI diesel engine is fitted to Focus vehicles starting with Q1 '99 models. (1/4)


2. Disconnect the tapered roller bearings from the differential (illustration shows 1.8L Endura-DI diesel engine).
  • 1. Install the special tool.
  • 2. Remove tapered roller bearings.
  • Disconnect the speedometer worm wheel (diesel engine 1.8L Endura-DI) or vehicle speed sensor ring (VSS ring) (2.0L Zetec-E engine).

NOTE: Use a copper drift.



Disconnect the spur gear.
  • Turn out bolts.
  • Remove the spur gear with light tapping.



Assembly

NOTE: Do not apply oil to reusable tapered roller bearings. It is not necessary to apply oil to new tapered roller bearings prior to installation.


Carefully clean and check all elements. Before assembly, transmission fluid is applied to them.

2. Install the spur gear on the differential. Tighten the bolts evenly, working diagonally.

NOTE: The speedometer drive worm wheel or vehicle speed sensor ring must engage in the recess in the housing.


Press on tapered roller bearing (illustration shows 1.8L Endura-DI diesel engine).
  • 1. Install the speedometer worm wheel (diesel engine 1.8L Endura-DI) or VSS ring (2.0L Zetec-E engine).
  • 2. Press on the tapered roller bearing using a press and special tool.

CAUTION: Do not use a tapered roller bearing as a support.


Install Tapered Roller Bearing (from the side of the spur gear) (illustration shows 1.8L Endura-DI diesel engine).
  • Support the differential under the spur gear.
  • Press on the tapered roller bearing using the special tool and press.
