The Focus is fitted with a hydraulic clutch system similar to that used in the 1997 Mondeo. The brake fluid reservoir has a separate chamber containing brake fluid for the clutch system.

When the clutch pedal is pressed, the pressure in the clutch master cylinder increases and the built-in clutch release bearing in the clutch slave cylinder is activated. The advantages of hydraulic clutch drive are as follows:
  • Automatic adjustment
  • Less working effort
  • Low wear

Compared to the 1997 Mondeo, the following points have been changed:

  • Clutch slave cylinder bleed and pressure ports
  • Ports on the clutch master cylinder
  • No preload valve available; preload is created by a spring
  • Lack of adjustment of the clutch pedal stroke

Tank

The brake fluid reservoir contains brake fluid for the clutch hydraulic drive and brake system.

The reservoir has two separate chambers: for the clutch hydraulic drive and the brake system. If there are leaks in the clutch hydraulic drive, the brake system continues to operate normally.

Clutch master cylinder

The clutch master cylinder creates the pressure required to engage the clutch.

When the brake pedal is pressed, the piston rod moves the piston of the clutch master cylinder. The hydraulic fluid in the clutch master cylinder is supplied under pressure through the high-pressure line to the clutch slave cylinder.

Clutch slave cylinder

The central clutch slave cylinder with a built-in thrust bearing (clutch release bearing) is secured to the clutch housing with three bolts. The thrust bearing is installed in the clutch slave cylinder with an interference fit.

The hydraulic fluid supplied by the clutch master cylinder piston moves the piston in the clutch slave cylinder, which in turn moves the clutch release bearing axially. The inner ring of the clutch release bearing presses on the projections of the diaphragm spring. The coupling between the driven clutch disc and the flywheel is broken.

After releasing the clutch pedal, the diaphragm spring returns the piston of the clutch slave cylinder to its original position. The clutch between the driven disk and the flywheel is restored.
