Removing the N·manual transmission (pre-1988 models)

The gearbox is removed downwards. Therefore, a car lift or inspection hole is required to remove and install the gearbox, in addition, a garage jack with a wooden stand is needed.

Disconnect ground wire (-) battery.

Caution: Disconnecting the battery will erase the contents of the electronic memories, such as engine trouble codes or radio codes. Before switching off, also read the instructions in chapter "Removing and installing the battery".


Unscrew the handle from the gear lever and remove the cuff through the lever.

Remove center console see p. 137.

After removing the four mounting bolts, lift the inner sleeve retaining frame off the tunnel. Remove the inner cuff together with the frame and soundproofing cushion through the gear lever.



Unscrew the bolts securing the gear lever at the extension of the gearbox and remove the lever.

Vehicles with V6 engine up to 8/94: remove the distributor cap and take out the rotor.

Vehicles with a diesel engine: Loosen the clips in the engine compartment on the left and right and remove the soundproofing cover.

If equipped, remove the lower engine cover, see p. 10.


Vehicles with V6 engine and diesel engine up to 8/94: Loosen the fastening of the upper and lower parts of the radiator air duct.

Raise the car on the goats.



Models since 9/94. unscrew the fastening of the cross member under the gearbox / exhaust system (OG).

Remove exhaust system as an assembly, see p. 80.

Vehicles with catalytic converter: unscrew the fastening to the underbody of the heat shield of the catalytic converter.

Remove starter. First disconnect the wire from the starter and disconnect the plug connectors, see p. 167.

Models up to 8/94: unscrew the attachment to the side members of the front axle stabilizer, see p. 93.



Models from 9/94: Loosen rear axle cross member -1- to gain access to propshaft flange -2-.



Unfasten propeller shaft at the intermediate bearing at the bottom of the body and at the flange of the final drive of the rear axle.
