Automatic transmission

            0

FORD SCORPIO cars can also be equipped with an automatic transmission. The four gears for forward movement are controlled electronically and hydraulically. This means that the hydraulic system of the transmission is controlled by an electronic unit that selects the correct shift points depending on the vehicle speed and engine load. Therefore, the gearbox control unit is linked to the engine control unit. When the accelerator pedal is pressed all the way down, the switch located on the pedal is activated; in this case, the transmission shifts to a lower gear. and higher torque can be used to accelerate the vehicle.

The power connection between the engine and gearbox is carried out hydraulically through a torque converter.

Models since 9/94

When the 3rd or 4th gear is engaged and the crankshaft speed is high, the converter is automatically locked using a mechanical lock. to prevent it from slipping. This reduces friction losses during power transmission and ensures low fuel consumption, especially when driving on the motorway.

Using the button switch on the center console, you can switch to special control programs: normal (with the lowest fuel consumption), sports and when driving on slippery roads.

To assess the performance of automatic transmission and correct troubleshooting, experience with such gearboxes and expensive special devices are required. Therefore, in the section "Maintenance" only checks are described.

Attention: When towing a vehicle with an automatic transmission, certain requirements must be met, see p. 191.
