Automatic transmission (Scorpio 2)

FORD SCORPIO cars can also be equipped with an automatic transmission. The control of the moments of engagement of the four gears for moving forward is carried out electronically-hydraulic. This means that the control of the hydraulic system of the gearbox is carried out by an electronic unit, which selects the correct moments of gear shifting depending on the speed of the car and the engine load. Therefore, the gearbox control unit is connected to the engine control unit. When the accelerator pedal is pressed sharply to the stop, the switch located on the pedal is activated; in this case, the gearbox shifts to a lower gear and more torque can be used to accelerate the car.

The power connection between the engine and the gearbox is carried out hydraulically via a torque converter.

When 3rd or 4th gear is engaged and the crankshaft speed is high, the converter is automatically locked using a mechanical lock. to prevent it from slipping. This reduces friction losses during power flow transmission and ensures low fuel consumption, especially when driving on the motorway.

Using the push-button switch on the central console, you can switch to special control programs: normal (with the lowest fuel consumption), sport, and for driving on slippery roads.

To assess the performance of the automatic transmission and to correctly find the fault, experience working with such transmissions and expensive special devices are required. Therefore, in the section "Maintenance" only checks are described.
