The automatic transmission installed in FORD FIESTA vehicles differs from the automatic transmissions used in vehicles of other manufacturers.

Fig. 3.37 shows the structure of an automatic transmission and its components.

This STX gearbox has automated control, as well as a continuously variable friction belt transmission, operating across the entire range of vehicle speeds.

The drive from the engine to the drive shaft of the STX gearbox is carried out via a multi-plate wet clutch.

The gear ratios of the STX automatic transmission correspond to the gear ratios of the six-speed manual transmission

The continuously variable transmission of the drive to the wheels of the car is carried out using a belt transmission installed in the automatic transmission. The belt operating in this transmission consists of steel sections, due to which the belt has sufficient elasticity with high strength.

The following subsections of the book will describe only the maintenance and adjustment actions necessary to ensure the correct operation of the automatic transmission.

Disassembly of the automatic transmission and its inspection, as well as repair, are possible only with special tools and control devices. The specialist performing the repair must have the necessary technical knowledge and sufficient practical experience. Therefore, repairs of the automatic transmission can only be carried out in specialized maintenance workshops.
