Checking the ignition coil

Engines up to 8/94

The ignition coil is checked with an ohmmeter.

Disconnect ground wire (-) battery.

Caution: Disconnecting the battery will erase the contents of the electronic memories, such as engine trouble codes or radio codes. Before switching off, also read the instructions in chapter "Removing and installing the battery".

Disconnect all wires from the ignition coil. Low voltage connectors -terminals 1 and 15- must first be marked with adhesive tape.

Checking the resistance of the primary winding -A-

Connect an ohmmeter between the low voltage terminals.

Measure resistance. If the prescribed resistance value of 0.72 to 0.88 ohm is not reached, the ignition coil must be replaced.

Checking the resistance of the secondary winding -B-

Connect an ohmmeter between terminals 4 (high voltage terminal in the center) and to one of the low voltage terminals.

Measure resistance. If the prescribed resistance value is between 4.5 and 7.0 kΩ (for DOHC engine from 4.5 to 8.6 kOhm) is not achieved, the ignition coil must be replaced.

Connect the electrical wires to the ignition coil.

Connect ground wire to battery (-).

If available, set the clock and enter the anti-theft code for the radio.

Attention: If you need to replace the ignition coil, then in no case install a coil designed for an ignition system with an interrupter, otherwise the control unit will fail.
