Checking the ignition distributor cap / high voltage wires

            0

Engines up to 8/94

If the resistance of the high voltage wires and the ignition distributor cap is too high, it may be difficult to start the engine and miss flashes in the cylinders.

Switch off the ignition.

Remove the distributor cap and the tips of all spark plugs.

Attention: When doing this, pull only on the plugs, not on the high voltage wires.

Check of a cover of the distributor of ignition

Check the contacts in the cover of the ignition distributor for wear and burning, if necessary, clean them with a file.

Check the central contact for ease of movement and the absence of wear; to do this, press the contact with your finger

Check the ignition distributor cap for traces of leakage current. Leakage current appears as uneven dark lines on the outer surface of the cover.

Check whether the ignition distributor cover is dry on the inside, if necessary, wipe it with a clean cloth. Then spray on the inside of the cover with a spray to remove moisture from the contacts.

Remove the ignition distributor rotor and check for traces of leakage current and the cleanliness of the contacts; if necessary, clean the rotor.

If equipped, lubricate the felt seal of the distributor shaft.

Insert the distributor rotor so that the protrusion of the rotor locks into the groove of the distributor shaft. Easily turning the rotor in different directions, make sure that its installation is secure.

Checking high voltage wires

Attention: If high voltage wires are removed completely, their location should be marked with tags to facilitate subsequent reassembly.

Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance of each high voltage wire between the contact in the distributor cap and the contact in the spark plug tip. The prescribed resistance value is 30 kV.

If the resistance is higher, clean the wire connection points and repeat the measurement, if necessary, replace the high voltage wire.

Bend the high voltage wires in the area of the spark plug tip with a small radius and check for cracks; if necessary, replace all high voltage wires.

Attach the ignition distributor cover and secure it with two screws or clips.

Connect spark plug ends.
