Checking the distributor cap/high voltage wires (Scorpio 2)

Engines up to 8/94

If the resistance of the high-voltage wires and the distributor cap is too high, it may cause difficulties with starting the engine and misfiring in the cylinders.

Turn off the ignition.

Remove the distributor cap and all spark plug caps.

Caution: When doing this, pull only on the plugs, not on the high-voltage wires.

Checking the distributor cap

Check the contacts in the ignition distributor cap for wear and tear and, if necessary, clean them with a file.

Check the central contact for ease of movement and absence of wear; to do this, press the contact with your finger

Check the distributor cap for signs of leakage current. Leakage current appears as uneven dark lines on the outer surface of the cap.

Check if the distributor cap is dry on the inside, if necessary, wipe it with a clean cloth. Then spray the inside of the cap with a spray to remove moisture from the contacts.

Remove the ignition distributor rotor and check for any traces of leakage current and clean contacts; clean the rotor if necessary.

If equipped, lubricate the felt seal on the distributor shaft.

Insert the distributor rotor so that the rotor protrusion is fixed in the distributor shaft groove. Gently turn the rotor in different directions to ensure that it is securely installed.

Checking high voltage wires

Checking high voltage wires

Caution: If high voltage wires are removed completely, their location should be marked with tags to facilitate subsequent reassembly.

Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance of each high-tension wire between the contact in the distributor cap and the contact in the spark plug tip. The prescribed resistance value is 30 kV.

If the resistance of the wire connection point is higher, clean it and repeat the measurement; if necessary, replace the high-voltage wire.

Bend the high-voltage wires in the spark plug tip area to a small radius and check for cracks; if necessary, replace all high-voltage wires.

Place the distributor cap on and secure it with two screws or clamps.

Connect the spark plug caps.
