The fuel injectors are thin, five-hole (pencil-type) nozzles, centered in the piston recesses. The nozzles are secured to the cylinder head with clamps.
The injector tips are protected from direct contact with the cylinder head by copper heat-shielding washers. New washers should be installed each time the injectors are removed.
The best possible mixture formation is ensured by the intake of a swirling air flow and high fuel injection pressure.
High pressure fuel pump
Ford Focus has a high-pressure fuel pump of the Bosch VP-30 distributor type. The pump has a chain drive from the crankshaft and a built-in pump control unit located on the upper surface of the pump.
The pump control unit receives data from the rotation angle sensor located in the high-pressure fuel pump and the powertrain control module (PCM). The pump control unit calculates operating signals for the high-pressure solenoid valve and the fuel injection timing solenoid valve, which allows the fuel supply to be controlled through the high-pressure solenoid valve.
The fuel system has a built-in feature that prevents the fuel in the fuel tank from being completely used up (until the tank is empty) and air from entering the system. In the first stage of the fuel-free strategy, when the fuel level in the fuel tank reaches 9% of the full tank, the low fuel warning light should be on. When the fuel level in the fuel tank reaches 4% of the full tank, the engine will begin to misfire and the maximum engine speed will decrease until the engine stalls.
A new high-pressure fuel pump may be supplied in a locked or unlocked condition. This can be determined by inspecting the locking bolt of the high-pressure fuel pump drive shaft. A locked high-pressure fuel pump is equipped with a hexagonal head bolt and is supplied with a spacer. An unlocked high-pressure fuel pump is equipped with an internal hexagon bolt and does not have any spacer. A locked fuel pump drive shaft should not be turned.
The high-pressure fuel pump must be filled with fuel before attempting to start the engine. For more information, refer to the High-pressure Fuel Pump chapter in this section.
When installing a new high pressure fuel pump, the fuel system must be drained of fuel.
If the high-pressure fuel lines have been disconnected on one side or the other, or have been completely removed, they must be replaced with new ones during installation, as it is impossible to guarantee that they are connected correctly.
