Microphone
The microphone is located on the driver's side A-pillar trim panel. The microphone is secured to the trim panel by a clip that must be installed in the proper position. For additional information, refer to Section 501-05.
Antenna
The antenna is located at the bottom of the windshield on the passenger side. The antenna and antenna cable are designed as one piece and can only be replaced as a single unit. The antenna is glued to the windshield. If the windshield has been removed for any reason, a new antenna must be installed. The location of the antenna is important. For more information, refer to the Antenna - Cellular Phone chapter in this section.
Portable mode support module
The portable mode support module is located behind the glove compartment and is secured with a screw. The portable mode support module controls the operation of the cell phone and transmits information to the audio unit.
Audio block
The audio unit must be compatible with the cell phone. Check the audio unit for a phone symbol after the model number (only available on 5000 and 6000 series audio units).
Cell Phone and Handset Bracket
A cell phone is mounted on a handset bracket; it can be removed by pressing the button on the handset bracket. The handset bracket has two connectors located under the center console. One of them connects the bracket to the portable mode support module, the other to the antenna.
Remote control handle
The remote control knob can be used to select functions without using the cellular phone handset. For details, refer to the "Audio Equipment Guide".
Operating principles
When the ignition switch is moved from position 0, the Portable Support Module (PSM) circuit is energized and the internal microcontroller initializes the system. This process includes a check to confirm that a cell phone is connected via the proprietary telephone serial bus (DSC). Upon receiving this information, the microcontroller confirms this condition by sending an operational signal to the audio unit.
After receiving this signal, the audio unit displays the message PHONE on the display for a short time and then returns to the media display mode.
If a cellular phone is installed on the handset cradle, pressing the menu button on the audio unit will display PHONE on the audio unit display and additional functions will be available. For more information, refer to the "Audio Guide". If a cellular phone is not installed on the handset cradle, NO PHONE will be displayed on the audio unit display.
If a cellular telephone is mounted on the handset bracket, additional functions can be selected using the SEEK or PRESET buttons on the audio unit or using a special remote control knob mounted on the steering column. This allows the system to scan the stored phone book, with the telephone number/name information being sent to the audio unit via the AVP bus and displayed on the screen.
When powering up the PSM, the microcontroller also checks the battery level of the cell phone by monitoring the control signal transmission circuits between the cell phone and the PSM unit.
During an outgoing or incoming telephone call, the PTA call signaling line is initialized, the cellular phone transmits/receives analog information through external transmitters, not through the internal speaker-microphone.
Information coming through the external microphone is converted into digital form in PSM and transmitted to the mobile phone via the DSC bus. Information coming through the downlink is decoded from the GSM format and sent to the analog inputs of the audio unit via a coupled pair of call signal transmission lines.
If the cell phone is removed from the handset cradle while still in talk mode, the PSM detects this condition and provides the audio unit with the ability to return to media mode. The cell phone also detects this condition, enters portable mode, and switches to using the internal antenna rather than the vehicle's windshield-mounted antenna. If the cell phone is placed back on the handset cradle, hands-free mode is restored.
