Operating principle
GEM controls and manages various functions, as well as the anti-theft system, central locking system and double door locking. GEM is located on the right-hand "A" pillar. GEM has a self-test function. Full diagnostics cover input and output devices. Several different types of GEM are used.

Inspection and verification
1. Check the validity of the customer's complaint.
2. Perform a visual inspection for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.
Visual inspection table
Electrical factors:
- Fuse Box(s)
- Lamp(s)
- Plug connector(s)
- Wiring harness
3. If an obvious cause for a reported or received complaint is identified, resolve it (if possible) before proceeding with further action.
4. If the cause of the complaint is not obvious upon visual inspection, clarify the symptom of the malfunction and refer to the Symptoms Table.

A1: PERFORMING SELF-TEST |
1Enter the ON position. |
2To enter self-test mode, press the 'S' button for five seconds. You can then perform individual tests sequentially by pressing the S button as many times as required. To exit self-test mode at any time, press the R button. |
3Entry requirements for checks: Please refer to the table below.. |
4Determine the result. |
• Is the self-test successful? |
→ Yes |
REPAIR the problem, if necessary CHECK the system using WDS. CHECK that the system is working correctly. |
→ No |
If the trip computer does not respond to scan tool requests, check the system using WDS: Refer to Section 418-00 for additional information. |

Description of verification stages |
1 |
Turn on the backlight of all displays and segments. The sound signal generator transmits a request signal (0.13 seconds long, every two seconds). |
2 |
Turn on the backlight of all displays and segments. The sound signal generator is switched off. |
3 |
Requirement: The vehicle is moving. Turn off all displays and segments. The display shows "km/h". The input signal level from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is evaluated, the number of pulses is divided by 50 and displayed on the display in discrete form from "000" to "999". |
4 |
Requirement: Engine running. "L/h" appears on the display. The input signal from the PCM (fuel consumption) is evaluated, the number of pulses is divided by 10 and displayed on the display. |
5 |
The display shows "ШL/100km". The display shows the calculated value of average fuel consumption. |
6 |
The "Fuel Pump" symbol appears on the display. The value sent by the fuel level sensor is displayed directly on the display in liters and/or gallons. If there is an open circuit in the fuel flow sensor circuit, the display shows "OC". If there is a short circuit in the fuel flow sensor circuit, the display shows "SC". |
7 |
The display shows "—→ Fuel pump symbol" and the reference voltage value for the fuel gauge sensor. |
8 |
The display shows the designation "MPG", the currently programmed correction factor for the fuel consumption value (the value can be calibrated in the range from -25 to +25). |
9 |
On the display "°C", the outside temperature value is displayed directly. "OC" is displayed if the value is below -40°C or if there is a break in the electrical circuit. "SC" is displayed if the value is above 65°C or if there is a break in the electrical circuit. |
10 |
The input voltage of the instrument light dimmer is compared with the internal value. If the comparison result is positive, the display shows "HI"; if the comparison result is negative, "LO" is displayed. |
11 |
Measures battery voltage. "Lbt" is displayed if the value is less than 11.5 V; "Hbt" is displayed if the value is greater than 11.5 V. |
12 |
Display "r8.8" The display shows the current ROM version (example: 2.9) |
13 |
Self-examination starts from the beginning. |

DETAILS/RESULTS/ACTIONS |
B1: PERFORMING SELF-TEST |
NOTE:When the perimeter anti-theft device (alarm) is activated, it is impossible to enter the self-test mode. |
1Enter the OFF position. • Turn off all electrical loads. • Switch the interior lighting to the delay function • Place the transmission in PARK/NEUTRAL (automatic transmission) • Close all doors. • Fasten the driver's seat belt |
2Enter the self-test mode: press and hold the rear window defroster switch, turn the ignition switch to the RUN/START position and release the rear window defroster switch. This is confirmed by one beep and one light (the battery saver will turn off the functions after an appropriate period of time). • Input Device Tests: Any time the wiper/washer switch is not in the intermittent cleaning position, input device tests will be performed. If the input signal of any switch being tested is normal, this will be confirmed by one audible signal and one visual signal. Please refer to the table below.. • Output Device Tests: Any time the wiper/washer switch is not in the intermittent wipe position (with the ignition switch in the RUN/START position), input device tests will be performed. Activating the rear window defogger switch will activate and deactivate the output devices in this sequence. Please refer to the table below.. • To exit the service mode, press and hold the rear window defogger switch, turn the ignition switch to the OFF/ACC position and release the rear window defogger switch again. Any time the vehicle speed exceeds 5 km/h or no input device is activated for more than 20 seconds, the service mode is also exited. This is confirmed by three beeps and one light. • Self-test on demand Please refer to the table below.. |
3Determine the result. |
• Is the self-test successful? |
→ Yes |
REPAIR the problem, if necessary CHECK the system using WDS. CHECK that the system is working correctly. |
→ No |
If the common electronic module does not respond to scan tool requests, check the system using the WDS: Refer to Section 418-00 for additional information. |
Input signal checks:
- Open the door
- Turn on the parking lights
- Turn on the heated windshield
- Turn on the rear window heating
- Turn on the windshield washer
- Turn on the windshield wipers
- Turn on the rear window washer
- Turn on the rear window wiper
- Turn on the left turn signal
- Turn on the right turn signal
Output signal checks:
- The windscreen wipers will be activated (returning back to the off position is confirmed by one beep)
- Action: Measure the voltage in the rear window heating circuit.
- The interior lighting will be on
- The door ajar warning indicator will illuminate (Instrument cluster)
- The rear window wiper will be activated
- Action: Start the engine and exit the mode using the rear window defroster switch
- The heated windshield will be activated (the heated windshield indicator will be on)
- The seat belt warning light will be on (instrument cluster)
