Disassembly of the steering mechanism of cars produced before May 1983 (Escort 3)

Remove the protective covers and drain the grease from the mechanism housing. Clamp the steering mechanism in a vice with soft metal pads. Use a G34.9 mm drill to drill out the pins of the steering rod axial joints (Fig. 5.2).

NOTE: Before drilling, be sure to mark the holes with a center punch to avoid damaging the parts. Drill to a depth of no more than 9.5 mm.


Unscrew the axle joint housings and lock nuts. Remove the joint housings, steering rods and joint bearing pads using special keys 13.003-01 and 13 003-02. Unscrew the rack stop plug, remove the gasket, adjusting washers and stop. Remove the drive pinion bearing cover, gasket and oil seal. Remove the pinion with the shaft and bearing.

NOTE: The drive gear is supplied complete with bearing as spare parts.
