Installing the steering gear (Escort 3)

Install the locknuts and steering rod ends on the rack, screwing them in exactly the number of turns recorded during removal. Install rubber supports on the steering gear housing. Make sure that the steering wheel is set to the straight-ahead position and set the rack to the middle position.

Place the steering gear under the vehicle and insert the splined end of the pinion shaft into the lower part of the steering shaft. Secure the steering gear with clamps, lock the clamp bolts with new lock washers. Attach the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Tighten the castle nuts and install new cotter pins. Tighten the clamp bolt connecting the steering shaft to the pinion shaft.

Lower the vehicle, check the front wheel alignment and adjust if necessary. Make sure the steering wheel is in the correct position.
