Removing the steering gear (Escort 3)

Set the wheels to the straight-ahead position. Place the front of the car on stands. Loosen and remove the tightening bolt of the elastic coupling connecting the shaft to the drive gear.

Remove the cotter pins and loosen the nuts of the ball joint pins of the steering rods, press the pins out of the steering knuckles using a puller and remove the nuts. Loosen and remove the bolts securing the steering gear housing to the body and remove the mounting clamps.

Remove the steering gear assembly with rods. Remove the steering rod ends with locknuts. Record the number of turns when unscrewing each rod. Remove the rubber supports from the steering gear housing.
