The steering column and shaft are trauma-safe, the damper is installed in the upper part of the shaft. The steering shaft consists of two parts connected by a cardan joint. The drive pinion is helical. The steering drive consists of the right and left steering rods connected by ball joints to the steering knuckles.
Steering ratio 19.64. Minimum turning radius 10.54 m. The position of the rack stop is adjusted with steel washers of 0.127 thickness; 0,19; 0,25; 0.38 and 0.50 mm. The protrusion of the washers and the thrust gasket is within 0.015-0.150 mm. The torque of the drive gear is 0.031-0.130 kgf·m. The tension of the ball joints is within 0.36-0.58 kgf·m. 95 cm³ of semi-liquid grease according to the Ford SAM-1 C-9106-A specification is placed in the steering gear housing.
Since May 1983, first on the Escort cars and then on the Orion, a new steering system was installed. On the Escort RS 1600i cars, the steering wheel has four spokes and a leather cover. The differences of the new rack are as follows: the position of the stop is adjusted by a plug, which is punched after adjustment, i.e. without the use of adjusting washers; the position of the drive gear and bearing is also adjusted with a plug, which is punched after adjustment; the protective covers are secured with only one clamp on the steering gear housing side, and on the steering rod side they are held in place by annular grooves on the steering rods.
