Removal and installation of a steering shaft

Disassembly


Disconnect the wires from the battery terminals. Unscrew the nut, remove the bolt and remove the clamp connecting the steering shaft to the drive gear. Remove the steering wheel trim, unscrew the nut and remove the steering wheel with a puller. Remove the steering shaft cover. If there is a soundproof panel under the instrument panel, remove it. Loosen the bolt securing the hood lock lever and remove the lever. Remove the steering column switch. Disconnect the ignition switch connector. Unscrew the nuts and remove the bolts and collar of the lower steering column mounting, nuts from the studs of the upper mounting collar.

Raise the steering column with the shaft and remove the shim from the top of the shaft. Remove the steering shaft, lower bearing and compression spring from the steering column. Drill out bolts without heads cut off during installation and remove the anti-theft device, as well as the ignition switch. Remove the upper steering column bearing.

Assembly


Install the upper bearing into the body of the anti-theft device. Install an anti-theft device and an ignition switch on the steering column. Install the two break bolts securing the anti-theft device and the ignition switch and tighten them until the heads are sheared. Install a conical release spring into the steering column, with larger diameter coils towards the lower thrust bearing. On the steering shaft, install the lower bearing with the tapered side to the tapered side of the steering shaft support.

Insert the steering shaft into the steering column. Install the adjusting gear on the top of the shaft. Install the turn signal drive cam with the pin up. Install the steering wheel, making sure that the cam fits into the groove in the steering wheel. Reinstall the assembled steering column and secure it with clamps. Connect the ignition switch connector. Connect the stalk switch and hood latch lever connectors.

Install the trim cover, check the position of the steering wheel and tighten the fastening nut. Install a soundproof panel under the instrument panel, if provided, tighten the steering shaft to drive gear clamp and connect the wires to the battery terminals.
