Disassembly
Disconnect the wires from the battery terminals. Loosen the nut, remove the bolt and remove the clamp connecting the steering shaft to the drive pinion. Remove the decorative steering wheel trim, loosen the nut and use a puller to remove the steering wheel. Remove the steering shaft trim cover. If there is a soundproofing panel under the instrument panel, remove it. Loosen the hood lock drive lever mounting bolt and remove the lever. Remove the steering column switch. Disconnect the ignition switch connector. Loosen the nuts and remove the bolts and clamp of the lower steering column mount, the nuts from the studs of the upper mount clamp.
Raise the steering column with the shaft and remove the adjusting washer from the upper part of the shaft. Remove the steering shaft, lower bearing and pressure spring from the steering column. Drill out the bolts without heads cut off during installation and remove the anti-theft device, as well as the ignition switch. Remove the upper bearing of the steering column.
Assembly
Install the upper bearing in the anti-theft device housing. Install the anti-theft device and ignition switch on the steering column. Screw in the two breakaway bolts securing the anti-theft device and ignition switch and tighten them until the heads are sheared off. Install the conical release spring in the steering column, with the larger diameter coils facing the lower thrust bearing. Install the lower bearing on the steering shaft with the conical side facing the conical side of the steering shaft support.
Insert the steering shaft into the steering column. Install the adjusting gear on the upper part of the shaft. Install the turn signal drive cam with the pin facing up. Install the steering wheel, making sure that the cam fits into the steering wheel groove. Install the assembled steering column in place and secure it with clamps. Connect the ignition switch connector. Connect the connectors of the steering column switch and the hood lock drive lever.
Install the trim cover, check the position of the steering wheel and tighten the mounting nut. Install the soundproofing panel under the instrument panel, if provided, tighten the clamp connecting the steering shaft to the drive pinion and connect the wires to the battery terminals.
