Operating principle
NOTE: After installing a new common electronic module (GEM) you need to configure it. See Section 418-01 for more information.
GEM constantly monitors all subsystems for problems. If a problem is detected in one of the subsystems, GEM will record information about the problem in the form of a diagnostic trouble code (DTC). The position of the ignition switch is very important for the GEM function. Often erratic or unexpected GEM operation can be traced to problems with ignition switch inputs.
Inspection and verification
1. Check the customer's complaint.
2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage.
Visual Inspection Table
Electrical factors:
- Fuse (And) central electrical box (CJB)
- Wiring harness
- Plug connector (s).
- Electrical circuit (And)
3. If the problem persists after inspection, connect the diagnostic connector to the data link connector (DLC), located under the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the scan tool menu. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
- check if the program card is installed correctly.
- check the connections going to the car.
- check the position of the ignition switch.
4. If the scan tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the service manual for the scan tool.
5. Run a DATA LINK diagnostic test. If the scan tool responds:
- CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, See Section 418-00 for more information.
- NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIP for GEM, Go to PINPOINT TEST E.
- SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record persistent DTCs (DTC), clear persistent DTCs, and run the GEM Self-Test Diagnosis.
6. If the retrieved DTCs are related to the problem, go to the Diagnostic Trouble Code Index (DTC).
7. If no problem-related DTCs are retrieved, refer to the appropriate section of the Workshop Manual to continue diagnosis.

PINPOINT TEST E: NO COMMUNICATION WITH COMMON ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)
STATES |
DETAILS/RESULTS/ACTIONS |
E1: IGNITION STATUS CHECK - PID GEM PARAMETER MONITORING: IGN_A, IGN_O/L, IGN_R, AND IGN_S |
1 Enter the OFF position. |
2 Connect the diagnostic tool. |
3 Monitor the GEM PIDs: IGN_A, IGN_O/L, IGN_R, and IGN_S as the ignition switch is turned through the START, RUN, OFF, and ACC positions. |
• Do the PID GEM values match the ignition switch positions? |
→ Yes |
Go to E2. |
→ No |
REPAIR the ignition circuit in question (RUN/ACC: electrical circuit 155-AA17 (black and yellow), KEY IN: IN 305-TA31A (red-black), idle position electrical circuit 315-TA3232 (black and white)). CLEAR DTCs. REPEAT the self test. |
E2: 29-DK20 ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT CHECK (ORANGE GREEN) AND ELECTRIC CIRCUIT 29-M11 (ORANGE-WHITE) FOR VOLTAGE |
1 Enter the OFF position. |
2 Disconnect C103 GEM.. |
3 Measure the voltage between pin 5 of connector C103 GEM, circuit 29-DK20 (orange green), wiring side, and ground and pin 1 of connector C103 GEM, circuit 29-AA17 (orange white), from the wiring side, and "ground". |
• Is the voltage greater than 10 V? |
→ Yes |
Go to E3. |
→ No |
REPAIR electrical circuits. CLEAR DTCs. REPEAT the self test. |
E3: GEM 31-DK20 ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT CHECK (BLACK) FOR A BREAK |
1 Disconnect C101 GEM. |
2 Measure the resistance between pin 5 of connector C101 GEM, circuit 31-DK20 (black), from the wiring side, and "ground". |
• Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? |
→ Yes |
Go to E4. |
→ No |
REPAIR the electrical circuit. CLEAR DTCs. REPEAT the self test. |
E4: GEM 91-DK20 ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT CHECK (BLACK-RED) FOR A BREAK |
1 Measure the resistance between pin 1 of connector C104 GEM, circuit 91-DK20 (black and red), from the wiring side, and "ground". |
• Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? |
→ Yes |
INSTALL a new GEM. REFER to ch. "General electronic module" presented in this section. CLEAR DTCs. REPEAT the self test. |
→ No |
REPAIR the electrical circuit. CLEAR DTCs. REPEAT the self test. |
