Generic Electronic Module (GEM)

Operating principle

NOTE: After installing a new common electronic module (GEM) you need to configure it. See Section 418-01 for more information.

GEM constantly monitors all subsystems for problems. If a problem is detected in one of the subsystems, GEM will record information about the problem in the form of a diagnostic trouble code (DTC). The position of the ignition switch is very important for the GEM function. Often erratic or unexpected GEM operation can be traced to problems with ignition switch inputs.

Inspection and verification

1. Check the customer's complaint.

2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage.

Visual Inspection Table

Electrical factors:
  • Fuse (And) central electrical box (CJB)
  • Wiring harness
  • Plug connector (s).
  • Electrical circuit (And)

3. If the problem persists after inspection, connect the diagnostic connector to the data link connector (DLC), located under the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the scan tool menu. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
  • check if the program card is installed correctly.
  • check the connections going to the car.
  • check the position of the ignition switch.

4. If the scan tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the service manual for the scan tool.

5. Run a DATA LINK diagnostic test. If the scan tool responds:
  • CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, See Section 418-00 for more information.
  • NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIP for GEM, Go to PINPOINT TEST E.
  • SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record persistent DTCs (DTC), clear persistent DTCs, and run the GEM Self-Test Diagnosis.

6. If the retrieved DTCs are related to the problem, go to the Diagnostic Trouble Code Index (DTC).

7. If no problem-related DTCs are retrieved, refer to the appropriate section of the Workshop Manual to continue diagnosis.
