Reversing light switch

The reversing light switch provides an input that allows the park assist module to determine when the rear park assist is activated.

Work principles (vehicles manufactured up to 10.2001)

The parking assistance system detects obstacles behind the vehicle when the reverse gear select input signal sent to the parking assistance module is activated. The parking assistance module does this by calculating the distance to an object using four parking assistance sensors mounted in the rear bumper. The sensors can detect obstacles within a radius of approximately 1.5 m from the rear of the vehicle. The speaker of the display unit and the speaker of the parking aid module located on the C-pillar trim piece emit an intermittent warning chime and the corresponding warning LEDs illuminate (LED), showing the distance to the object. The interval between beeps decreases and the number of lit warning LEDs increases as the vehicle approaches the object. When an object is detected within 30 cm of the sensors, the warning tone becomes continuous and all warning LEDs flash.

For a description of how the parking assist display and speaker work, refer to "Operation manual".

The parking aid warning LEDs illuminate and the parking aid speaker emits a short beep as a system test when the ignition is turned to position II and reverse gear is engaged. The system is activated every time the ignition is switched to position II and reverse gear is engaged. The parking assistance system is deactivated when the reverse gear selection is deselected or if a malfunction is detected in one of the four parking assistance sensors or in the parking assistance module. If a malfunction is detected while the parking assistance system is activated, the system will indicate this by turning on two red warning LEDs and a continuous beep from the parking assistance speaker. If a short circuit is detected in the parking aid module fuse, the system indicates this by an audible signal from the parking aid speaker for three seconds followed by a three second pause. This sequence is repeated until reverse gear selection is cancelled.
