Reverse light switch
The reverse light switch provides an input signal that allows the parking assist module to determine when the rear parking assist system is activated.
Operating principles (cars manufactured before 10.2001)
The parking assist system detects obstacles behind the vehicle when the reverse gear select input signal sent to the parking assist module is activated. The parking assist module does this by calculating the distance to the object using four parking assist sensors mounted in the rear bumper. The sensors can detect obstacles within a radius of approximately 1.5 m from the rear of the vehicle. An intermittent warning tone is emitted from the speaker of the display unit and the speaker of the parking assist module located on the C-pillar trim element, and the corresponding warning light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are illuminated to indicate the distance to the object. The interval between the tones decreases and the number of warning LEDs illuminated increases as the vehicle approaches the object. When an object is detected within 30 cm of the sensors, the warning tone becomes continuous and all the warning LEDs flash.

The parking aid warning LEDs light up and the parking aid loudspeaker sounds a short tone as a system check when the ignition is turned to position II and reverse gear is engaged. The system is activated whenever the ignition is turned to position II and reverse gear is engaged. The parking aid is deactivated when reverse gear is deselected or if a fault is detected in one of the four parking aid sensors or in the parking aid module. If a fault is detected when the parking aid is activated, the system indicates this by illuminating two red warning LEDs and sounding a continuous tone from the parking aid loudspeaker. If a short circuit is detected in the parking aid module fuse link, the system indicates this by sounding a tone from the parking aid loudspeaker for three seconds followed by a three-second pause. This sequence is repeated until reverse gear is deselected.

The parking assist module does this by calculating the distance to the object using four parking assist sensors mounted in the rear bumper. The sensors can detect obstacles within a radius of approximately 1.5 m from the rear of the vehicle.
The parking assist module speaker, located on the C-pillar trim element, emits an intermittent warning tone. The interval between the tones decreases as the vehicle approaches the object. When an object is detected within 30 cm of the sensors, the warning tone becomes continuous.

The parking aid loudspeaker emits a short audible signal as a system check when the ignition is turned to position II and reverse gear is engaged. The system is activated whenever the ignition is turned to position II and reverse gear is engaged. The parking aid is deactivated when reverse gear is deselected or if a fault is detected in one of the four parking aid sensors or in the parking aid module. If a fault is detected when the parking aid is activated, the system indicates this with a continuous audible signal from the parking aid loudspeaker. If a short circuit is detected in the fuse insert of the parking aid module, the system indicates this with an audible signal from the parking aid loudspeaker for three seconds, followed by a three-second pause. This sequence is repeated until reverse gear is deselected.
