Inspection and verification
1. Check the customer complaint.
2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.
Mechanical factors |
Electrical factors |
• Tire pressure • Accessory drive belt • Wheels and tires • Leaks of working fluid in the power steering lines |
• Power Steering Pressure (PSP) Switch |
3. If an obvious cause for the problem you have identified or the customer has described is found, correct it (if possible) before proceeding with further actions.
4. If the cause is not visually obvious, check the malfunction symptom and refer to the Malfunction Symptom Table.

Element checks
Inspect the steering gear boots for cuts, displacement, twisting or deformation. Make sure the boots are securely fastened. Install new boots or clamps if necessary.
1. Park the vehicle on a dry, level, horizontal surface and apply the parking brake. Center the steering (straight ahead position).
2. With the engine running, gently turn the steering wheel to the right and left to check for play. Play is measured at the steering wheel rim and should be within the specification. If the play is outside the specification, the steering gear or steering column is worn, or there is excessive side play in the steering gear.
3. If the steering linkage is worn, install new components as necessary. Refer to Section 211-03 for additional information. The steering column cannot be repaired; install a new column. Refer to Section 211-04 for additional information. The steering gear side play cannot be adjusted; install a new steering gear. Refer to Section 211-02 for additional information.
4. With the engine off, grasp the steering wheel firmly with both hands. Try to move the steering wheel up and down and left and right without turning it. This will check for wear in the steering column bearings, play in the steering column shaft joint, and slack in the steering wheel or steering column. If play is found, check the steering column bolts, steering column shaft coupling, and steering wheel for proper tightening. The steering column cannot be repaired; install a new steering column. Refer to Section 211-04 for additional information.
