Inspection and verification

1. Check the customer's complaint.

2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

Mechanical factors

Electrical Factors

• Tire pressure

• Accessory drive belt

• Wheels and tires

• Leakage of working fluid in the lines of the power steering

• Power steering pressure switch (PSP)

3. If an obvious cause of the problem you identified or described by the client is found, eliminate it before proceeding to further actions (if possible).

4. If the cause is not visually obvious, check the symptom and refer to the Symptom Chart.

Symptom table

State

Possible Causes

Action

•Very hard/very light steering action

• Loose or worn accessory drive belt

•CHECK accessory drive belt. See Section 303-05 for more information.

• Pollution/narrowing of section of a hose of the amplifier of a steering.

•Check hoses for damage, kinks or restricted bore. Install new elements if necessary. See Section 211-02 for more information.

• Pollution of the working fluid

• FLUSH the power steering system. For more information refer to Power Steering System Flush - 1.8L Diesel (75 HP/90 HP) / Power Steering System Flushing - 1.8L Diesel (115 HP) / Power steering system flush - 1.4L/1.6L/1.8L/2.0L available in this section.

• Aeration (air saturation) working fluid

• BLEED air from the power steering system. For more information, refer to Power Steering System Bleeding available in this section.

• Jamming of the ball joints of the suspension

•Check suspension ball joints. See Section 204-00 for more information.

• Depreciation of the steering mechanism.

•Install a new steering gear. See Section 211-02 for more information.

• Steering column wear

• REFER to Ch. "Check steering gear".

• Deterioration of the power steering pump

•Install a new power steering pump. See Section 211-02 for more information.

• Steering does not respond to increased steering angle

• Wear of tie rod ends.

•Check and install new elements if necessary. See Section 211-03 for more information.

• Wear of front suspension bushings

• Install new bushings if necessary. See Section 204-01 for more information.

•Wear of suspension ball joints

•Check suspension ball joints. See Section 204-00 for more information.

• Depreciation of the upper support of the rack assembly with the spring

•Install a new upper strut support assembly with spring. See Section 204-01 for more information.

• Wear of the bearing bushings of the steering gear

•Check and install new elements if necessary. See Section 211-02 for more information.

• Loosening of the steering gear mounting bolts.

•Check and install new bolts if necessary. See Section 211-02 for more information.

• Loosening of the steering column mounting bolts.

•Check and install new bolts if necessary. See Section 211-04 for more information.

• Loosening of the steering column bolt to the steering gear.

• CHECK and, if necessary, INSTALL a new bolt. See Section 211-04 for more information.

•Increased side clearance in the steering mechanism

•Install a new steering gear. See Section 211-02 for more information.

• Gain does not change when vehicle speed changes

• PSP relay or electrical circuit

• Please refer to WDS for more information.

Item checks

Inspect the steering gear boots for cuts, misalignment, twisting, or deformation. Make sure the covers are secure. Install new boots or clips if necessary.

1. Park the vehicle on a dry, level, level surface and apply the parking brake. center steering (position "straight ahead").

2. With the engine running, gently turn the steering wheel to the right and left to check for play. The play is measured at the steering wheel rim and must be within the limits prescribed by the specification. If the amount of play is outside the prescribed limits, then the steering gear or steering column is worn out, or there is an increased backlash in the steering mechanism.

3. If the steering drive is worn out, install new elements if necessary. See Section 211-03 for more information. The steering column cannot be repaired, install a new column. See Section 211-04 for more information. The side clearance of the steering gear cannot be adjusted, install a new steering gear. See Section 211-02 for more information.

4. With the engine off, grasp the steering wheel and hold it firmly with both hands. Try moving the steering wheel up and down and also left and right without turning it. This checks for wear in the steering column bearings, clearance in the steering column shaft pivot, and slack in the steering wheel or steering column. If play is found, check that the steering column bolts, steering column shaft coupling and steering wheel are properly tightened. The steering column is beyond repair, install a new steering column. See Section 211-04 for more information.
