Driving with leaky clutch hydraulics (Focus Turnier 1)

Provided you have a little patience, sensitive handling of the gas pedal and gearshift lever, you will "outsmart" the Focus gearbox even without a clutch.

Starting without a clutch: Turn off the engine. Engage 1st gear, then pull the starter. The Focus will jerk forward as soon as the engine starts, gently apply the gas. If you don't want to change gears while driving, then on flat ground, engage 2nd gear first.

Upshifting without the clutch: Engage 1st gear just after the top of the idle speed (around 1000 rpm). Release the gas slightly, gently pull the gearshift lever through neutral to 2nd gear. If the gear sticks, add a little gas, release the gas pedal and gently push the gearshift lever to 2nd gear. With the engine and gearbox revs in sync, the lever will slide almost on its own. If you waited too long, you will have to add a little gas to get the gear to engage without "grinding teeth". If this doesn"t work, stop again and try again. Shifting into other gears is done in the same way. This is easiest at low speeds: 3rd gear at 30 km/h, 4th gear at 40 km/h and 5th at 50 km/h.

Downshifting without the clutch: This is best done at low engine speeds and speeds. First, take your foot off the accelerator and disengage the gear. Then gently apply the accelerator while pushing the gearshift lever toward the lower gear. At the correct engine speed, the gear will engage. Proceed in the same manner through all gears.
