Checking the cuffs of the drive shafts

            0

Raise the front of the vehicle securely so that the wheels hang freely.

Turn the steering wheel left and right as far as it will go. Turn the outer wheel by hand while checking the outer cuffs for small cracks and brittle areas. If dirt and dampness get into them, then a little time will pass and the hinge will become scrap metal. To check the inner cuffs, lie under the vehicle. Then the assistant will slowly rotate the wheels.

Check fastening of tension collars.

When checking the protective cuffs of the drive shafts, it is also necessary to check the fastening strength of the outer 1 and inner hose clamps 2. Band clamps with a hole are tightened with a side cutter (arrow). To do this, bend the recess in the form of a flattened «ABOUT», carefully press it down with the side cutter so that the cuff is not squeezed. The drive shaft must fit snugly against the collar.

Traces of grease on the cuff are an indisputable sign: find out the cause of the traces and eliminate it as soon as possible. Otherwise, you will soon be dealing with a destroyed drive joint. Internal hinges factory filled with 10 g (iB5) or 125 g (MTX-75) special lubricant. For a new filling of the outer joints, 100 g is required, when replacing the seal, 60 g of MoS2 grease is sufficient. Ford applies specifications SM-1C75-A or SQH-1C9004-A.
