Front brakes

Brake pads

Since August 1988 (production date code "JE"), the brake pad material in Ford Sierra vehicles with diesel engines has been changed. In addition, the brake disc flange thickness has been increased from 7 to 8.5 mm, and the steering knuckle flange thickness from 8 to 9 mm.

Installing new type front brake discs into old type steering knuckles

It is essential to check the length of the wheel mounting studs. If it is 36.5 mm, they must be replaced with studs 40 mm long (wheel mounting nuts must be installed on the corresponding thread length).

Checking the beats (measurement with a dial indicator)

Maximum runout of the steering knuckle: 0.08 mm.

Maximum disc runout: 0.08 mm.

Brake drive system

Vacuum pump

Since 1987, Ford Sierra diesels have been equipped with a new type of vacuum pump, mounted on the same bracket. It cannot be moved when adjusting the drive belt tension.

Installing the Vacuum Pump Drive Belt

1. Loosen the bolts securing the vacuum pump to the bracket and the bracket bracket bolts securing it to the engine.

2. Remove the mounting bolt from the bracket and move the vacuum pump.

3. Remove the pump drive belt.

4. Install a new belt. Insert the removed bolt and tighten all vacuum pump mounting bolts.

Brake hoses

When servicing the brake system, the condition of the brake hoses (along their entire length) should be checked.

Caution! When lifting the vehicle from below, the suspension elements are excessively lowered, which causes the elastic brake hoses to be pulled out of their mountings. The brake hoses should be carefully checked and installed in their mounting locations.

Anti-lock braking system

Since February 1988 (manufacture date code "JR"), the ABS pump ground wire is connected directly to the negative battery terminal.

Other information regarding the technical characteristics, adjustment and repair of the brake system is given in section 10.
