Ignition switch with steering wheel lock

The ignition switch is connected to the steering wheel lock. Located on the right side of the steering column.

The key in the ignition switch can occupy four designated positions:
  • О – ignition off, steering wheel locked; to unlock the steering wheel, insert the key and turn it clockwise, slightly turning the steering wheel to the right and left to facilitate the release of the blocking stopper;
  • I - ignition off, steering wheel unlocked; in this position, you can turn on the car radio;
  • II - the ignition is on, all electrical circuits are powered; If the vehicle is towed, the key must be set to this position (do not leave the key in this position for a long time with the engine off, as this can lead to failure of the ignition coil);
  • III - the starter is on; turning the key to this position requires overcoming the resistance of the return spring. The key does not stay in this position. After the weakening of the turning force, he returns to the position "II" (starter off).

Attention! The ignition switch mechanism prevents the starter from being turned on while the engine is running (this threatens to damage the starter and the ring gear on the engine flywheel). To turn on the starter, you must first turn the key to position "I" (and therefore, turn off the ignition and the engine, if it was running) and turn the key back to position "III".

Starting a cold engine

To check the thermal condition of the engine, turn the ignition key to position "I" and after about 30 seconds look at the coolant temperature gauge. If its arrow remains in the extreme left position, then the engine is cold and should be started as described below. If the engine is warm, follow the instructions below.

While starting the engine, the handbrake must be applied and the gearshift lever must be in the neutral position.

On vehicles with a manual transmission, before turning on the starter, press the clutch pedal to the stop and hold it in this position.

Engines equipped with a variable diffuser carburetor

1. Do not press the accelerator pedal. Ford carburetor (Motorcraft) with a variable diffuser section has an automatic starter and adjusts to the engine temperature.

2. Turn on starter. If the engine does not start within 10 seconds, turn the key to the "I", wait a few seconds and turn the starter on again.

Attention! Do not press the accelerator pedal while starting the engine.

3. If the engine still does not start, wait another 10 seconds and then follow the instructions given below.

4. After starting the engine, immediately release the force on the key, which will automatically return to the position "II".

Engines equipped with other types of carburetors with automatic starting device

1. To start the automatic carburetor starter, slowly depress the accelerator pedal fully twice (all the way) and let it go freely.

2. Turn on the starter (key in position "III". If the engine does not start within 10 seconds, turn the key to the "I", wait a few seconds and turn on the starter again.

Attention! Do not press the accelerator pedal while starting the starter.

3. After three unsuccessful attempts to start the engine, wait about 10 seconds and follow the instructions below.

4. After starting the engine, immediately release the force on the key, which will automatically return to the position "II".

5. If the running engine stalls, then you should repeat the steps to start the engine, first slowly depressing and releasing the accelerator pedal.

Engines equipped with other types of carburetors with a manually operated starting device

1. Pull out the carburetor starter lever as far as it will go. Slowly depress and release the accelerator pedal once (do not press it later in the process of starting the engine).

2. Turn on the starter (key in position "III". If the engine does not start within 10 seconds, turn the key to the "I", wait a few seconds and turn on the starter again.

Attention! Do not press the accelerator pedal while starting the starter.

3. If the engine does not start after the second attempt, wait about 10 seconds and follow the instructions below.

4. After starting the engine, immediately release the force on the key, which will automatically return to the position "II". As the engine warms up, gradually push in the carburetor starter lever to ensure even engine operation. Starting a warm gasoline engine.

5. Press the accelerator pedal half way down and hold it in that position.

6. Turn on starter. After starting the engine, immediately release the pressure on the key and on the accelerator pedal.

7. If the engine does not start after three attempts, then most likely it is flooded with fuel (there is a mixture in its cylinders that is too enriched with fuel).

Starting a warm gasoline engine

1. Press the accelerator pedal half way down and hold it in that position.

2. Turn on starter. After starting the engine, immediately relieve the pressure on the key and on the accelerator pedal

3. If the engine does not start after three attempts, then most likely it is flooded with fuel (there is a mixture in its cylinders that is too enriched with fuel). Proceed according to the instructions below.

Starting a gasoline engine filled with fuel

Slowly press the accelerator pedal to the stop, hold it in this position and turn on the starter. After starting the engine, slowly release the force on the accelerator pedal as the engine speed increases.

Diesel engine start

1. Turn the ignition key to position "II". The glow plug indicator light comes on.

2. Wait until the glow plug indicator light goes out.

3. Press the accelerator pedal all the way down.

Attention! At low ambient temperatures, to facilitate starting, before engaging the starter, depress the clutch pedal to disengage the gearbox containing thickened oil.

4. Turn on starter.

5. If the engine does not start within about 20 seconds, turn the key to the "I", wait a bit and restart the engine.

Attention! If it is impossible to start the engine due to lack of fuel, after filling the tank with fuel, it is necessary to remove air from the fuel system (see subsection 2.8).

Starting the engine with an additional battery

Connecting an additional battery to start the engine

1-4 - the order of connecting wires.

If the car's battery is dead, you can start the engine by connecting another charged battery.

1. Connect terminal () additional battery (IN) to terminal () car battery using a special starting wire (corresponding section).

2. Connect terminals (-) both batteries with the second starting wire.

Attention! First, you should connect the wires to the additional battery to avoid sparking in case of accidental contact of the wire terminal with the vehicle ground.

3. Do not disconnect the booster battery immediately after starting the engine while it is running at high idle. Wait until the engine has warmed up and is running at normal idle.
