Replacing valve stem seals (diesel engine) (Scorpio 2)

Removal

Remove the cylinder head cover.



Loosen the rocker arm axle mount.

Set the piston of the corresponding cylinder to TDC. To do this, first turn the crankshaft to the position corresponding to TDC for the piston of cylinder 1.

At the same time as the piston of cylinder 1, the piston of cylinder 4 is also at TDC. On the V-belt pulley located on the crankshaft, make a mark with chalk at the bottom. Then turn the crankshaft by 1/2 turn (180°) so that the mark moves up. In this case, pistons of cylinders 2 and 3 will be at TDC.

Loosen the fit of the crackers in the grooves of the valve stems by lightly tapping the upper plate of the valve springs with a rubber hammer.



Place special tool FORD 21-024 and 21-024-03/04 as shown in the figure and compress the valve springs.

Caution: When pressing the spring plate to remove the crackers, do not damage the valve stem. If the stem is damaged, the valve must be replaced, since a damaged stem wears out quickly.

Remove the crackers and release the valve spring.

Remove the upper and lower spring retainers and the valve spring.

Caution: Do not turn the crankshaft with the valve springs removed. Always replace the valve stem seals for each pair of cylinders (1 and 4, 2 and 3) as a set, and reinstall the springs with the spring plates before turning the crankshaft 180°. If the crankshaft is turned with the springs removed, the valves will fall into the combustion chamber and the cylinder head will have to be removed.

Press the oil seal using a screwdriver.

Caution: Remove the valve stem seals carefully so as not to damage their seats.

Installation

To avoid damaging the valve stem seals, cover the groove for the crackers in the valve stem with adhesive film.

Place the new lubricated valve stem seal onto the valve guide by hand.

Remove the adhesive film.

Insert the lower and upper spring plates together with the spring and compress the spring.

Insert the crackers and release the spring.

Replace the remaining oil seals in a similar manner.

Attach the rocker arm axle, making sure that the spherical tips of the push rods enter the rocker arms.

Engine up to 8/94 tighten the rocker arm axle mounting nuts to a torque of 55 Nm, and the bolts to a torque of 20 Nm.



Engine with 9/94. Turn the crankshaft by 20° from the position corresponding to TDC for the piston of cylinder 1. Lubricate the "arrow" nuts of the rocker shaft with transmission oil and tighten to a torque of 27 Nm. Caution: Before turning the engine crankshaft, wait at least 15 minutes to allow the hydraulic tappets to settle. Otherwise, the valves may collide with the portions.

Install the cylinder head cover.
