Engine ONS
Removal
Drain the coolant into a suitable container.
Remove the fan together with the coupling, see p. 41.
While holding the V-belt, loosen the bolts securing the "arrow" of the belt pulley.
Remove the V-belt, see p. 29.
Unscrew the belt pulley mounting bolts and remove the pulley from the hub.
Loosen the clamps and disconnect the heating system hose and the lower coolant hose.
Removed the timing belt cover, see p. 13.
Unscrew the 3 bolts securing the "arrow" and remove the coolant pump.
Installation
Clean the sealing surfaces from seal residues using a suitable scraper. In doing so, do not scratch the sealing surfaces under any circumstances. Clean the sealing surfaces from dirt and oil.
Attach the coolant pump with a new sealing gasket and tighten the mounting bolts. Tightening torque for M8 bolts: 20 Nm; m10 bolts: 40 Nm.
Install the timing belt cover.
Place the belt pulley in place and tighten the mounting bolts by hand.
Install the V-belt, see p. 29.
While holding the V-belt, tighten the belt pulley mounting bolts to a torque of 25 Nm.
Install the fan, see p. 41.
Connect the lower coolant hose, the heating system hose and secure them with clamps.
Fill with coolant, see p. 38.
After the test drive, check the cooling system for leaks.
DOHC Engine
Removal
Drain the coolant into a suitable container, see p. 38.
Remove the poly V-belt.
Loosen the coolant pump pulley mounting bolts and remove the pulley. When loosening the bolts, hold the pulley with an oil filter strap wrench, such as HAZET 2170.
To drain the coolant, place a suitable container under the pump.
Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the coolant pump together with the sealing ring.
Installation
Before installation, clean the sealing surfaces from rust and dirt. In doing so, do not scratch the sealing surfaces under any circumstances.
Insert a new sealing ring into the coolant pump groove.
Attach the coolant pump and tighten the mounting bolts to a torque of 25 Nm.
Place the belt pulley and, holding it with a strap wrench, tighten the mounting bolts to a torque of 25 Nm
Install the poly V-belt, see p. 29.
Fill with coolant, see p. 38.
After the test drive, check the cooling system for leaks.
V6-OHV engine up to 8/94
Removal
Note: on a V6-OHV engine, after removing the poly V-belt, you can unscrew the coolant pump mount without removing other parts from the crankcase. First, drain the coolant into a suitable container.
Remove the fan together with the coupling, see from 41.
While holding the V-belt, loosen the belt pulley mounting bolts.
Remove the V-belt, see p. 29.
Unscrew the belt pulley mounting bolts and remove the pulley from the hub.
Remove the thermostat, see p. 40.
Block the engine crankshaft, loosen and unscrew the crankshaft belt pulley mounting bolts by about 10 mm. To block the crankshaft, engage 1st gear and ask an assistant to press the brake pedal.
Place the special tool FORD 21-075A "B" and rest it on the bolt "A" of the belt pulley fastening. Release the belt pulley fastening.
Remove the special tool, unscrew the mounting bolt and remove the belt pulley.
Unscrew the bolts securing the "arrow" and remove the coolant pump.
Installation
Clean the sealing surfaces from seal residues using a suitable scraper. In doing so, do not scratch the sealing surfaces under any circumstances. Clean the sealing surfaces from dirt and oil.
Attach the coolant pump with a new sealing gasket and tighten the mounting bolts to a torque of 15 Nm.
Lock the engine crankshaft. To lock the crankshaft, engage 1st gear and ask an assistant to press the brake pedal. Attach the crankshaft belt pulley and tighten the fastener. Tightening torques for bolts: M12x1.5 45 mm long - 130 Nm, M12x1.5 75 mm long - 50 Nm and tighten by an angle of 90° (1/4 turn).
Install a thermostat, see p. 40.
Position the coolant pump belt pulley and hand tighten the mounting bolts.
Install the V-belt, see p. 29.
While holding the V-belt, tighten the belt pulley mounting bolts to a torque of 25 Nm.
Install the fan, see p. 41.
Fill with coolant, see p. 38.
After the test drive, check the cooling system for leaks.
Diesel engine
(except 2.5L turbocharged engine since 9/93)
Removal
Drain the coolant into a suitable container, see p. 38.
Loosen the clamps and disconnect the hose "B" to the oil cooler, the upper "A" and lower "C" coolant hoses.
While holding the V-belt, loosen the coolant pump belt pulley mounting bolts.
Remove the V-belt, see p. 29.
Unscrew the belt pulley mounting bolts and remove the pulley from the hub.
Remove the thermostat, see p. 40.
Disconnect the coolant temperature sensor connector.
Unscrew the coolant temperature sensor.
Unscrew the bolts securing the "arrow" and remove the coolant pump together with the mounting bracket.
Installation
Clean the sealing surfaces from seal residues using a suitable scraper. In doing so, do not scratch the sealing surfaces under any circumstances. Clean the sealing surfaces from dirt and oil.
Attach the coolant pump with a new sealing gasket and tighten the mounting bolts to a torque of 10 Nm.
Apply a little sealant to the thread of the coolant temperature sensor. Screw in the sensor and tighten. Connect the sensor plug connector.
Install a thermostat, see p. 40.
Place the coolant pump belt pulley with the spring washer and hand tighten the mounting bolt.
Install the V-belt, see p. 29.
While holding the V-belt, tighten the belt pulley mounting bolt to a torque of 70 Nm.
Connect and secure the coolant hoses with clamps.
Fill with coolant, see p. 38.
After the test drive, stop the car on a dry surface and check the cooling system for leaks.
