Removal and installation of the pump of a cooling liquid

            0

The coolant pump cannot be repaired. If a malfunction occurs, the pump must be replaced. If the shaft seal is leaking, the coolant, especially when the engine is running, escapes through the pump shaft vent and flows out of the crankcase. The coolant pump is driven by a V-belt or V-ribbed belt.

ONS engine

Withdrawal

Drain the coolant into a suitable container.

Remove fan with clutch see p. 41.

Hold the V-belt and loosen the securing bolts -arrows- of the belt pulley.

Remove the V-belt see p. 29.

Loosen the belt pulley mounting bolts and remove the pulley from the hub.

Loosen the clamps and disconnect the heating hose and the lower coolant hose.

Removed the toothed belt cover see p. 13.

Remove 3 securing bolts -arrows- and remove coolant pump.

Installation

Clean sealing surfaces of seal residues with a suitable scraper. The sealing surfaces must not be scratched under any circumstances. Clean sealing surfaces from dirt and oil.

Attach the coolant pump with a new seal and tighten the mounting bolts. Bolt tightening torques M8: 20 Nm; bolts M10: 40 Nm.

Install the toothed belt guard.

Attach the belt pulley and tighten the fastening bolts by hand.

Install the V-belt see p. 29.

While holding the V-belt, tighten the belt pulley bolts to 25 Nm.

Install a fan see p. 41.

Connect the lower coolant hose, heating hose and secure with clamps.

Fill in coolant see p. 38.

After the test drive, check the cooling system for leaks.

DOHC engine

Withdrawal

Drain the coolant into a suitable container, see p. 38.

Remove poly V-belt.

Remove the coolant pump pulley bolts and remove the pulley. When loosening the bolts, hold the pulley with an oil filter wrench, e.g. HAZET 2170.

Place a suitable container under the pump to drain the coolant.

Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the coolant pump together with the O-ring.

Installation

Before installation, clean the sealing surfaces from rust and dirt. The sealing surfaces must not be scratched under any circumstances.

Insert a new O-ring into the groove of the coolant pump.

Attach the coolant pump and tighten the mounting bolts to 25 Nm.

Attach the belt pulley and, holding it with a strap wrench, tighten the fastening bolts to a torque of 25 Nm

Install poly V-belt see p. 29.

Fill in coolant see p. 38.

After the test drive, check the cooling system for leaks.

V6-OHV engine up to 8/94

Withdrawal

Note: On the V6-OHV engine, after removing the V-ribbed belt, the coolant pump can be unscrewed without removing other parts from the crankcase. First drain the coolant into a suitable container.

Remove fan with clutch see from 41.

While holding the V-belt, loosen the belt pulley bolts.

Remove the V-belt see p. 29.

Loosen the belt pulley mounting bolts and remove the pulley from the hub.

Remove the thermostat see p. 40.

Block the crankshaft of the engine, loosen and unscrew the bolts securing the crankshaft belt pulley by about 10 mm. To block the crankshaft, engage 1st gear and ask an assistant to depress the brake pedal.

Attach special tool FORD 21-075A -B- and rest on the bolt -A- of the belt pulley. Loosen the belt pulley.

Remove the special tool, unscrew the mounting bolt and remove the belt pulley.

Remove securing bolts -arrows- and remove coolant pump.

Installation

Clean sealing surfaces of seal residues with a suitable scraper. The sealing surfaces must not be scratched under any circumstances. Clean sealing surfaces from dirt and oil.

Attach the coolant pump with a new seal and tighten the mounting bolts to 15 Nm.

Block the engine crankshaft. To block the crankshaft, engage 1st gear and ask an assistant to depress the brake pedal. Attach the crankshaft pulley and tighten the fastener. Bolt tightening torques: M12x1.5 45 mm long - torque 130 Nm, M12x1.5 75 mm long - torque 50 Nm and tighten by 90° (1/4 turn).

Install the thermostat see p. 40.

Fit coolant pump pulley and hand-tighten mounting bolts.

Install the V-belt see p. 29.

While holding the V-belt, tighten the belt pulley bolts to 25 Nm.

Install a fan see p. 41.

Fill in coolant see p. 38.

After the test drive, check the cooling system for leaks.

Diesel engine

(except 2.5l turbocharged engine from 9/93)

Withdrawal

Drain the coolant into a suitable container, see p. 38.

Loosen the fastening clamps and disconnect the hose -B- to the oil cooler, the upper -A- and lower -C- coolant hoses.

While holding the V-belt, loosen the coolant pump pulley bolts.

Remove the V-belt see p. 29.

Loosen the belt pulley mounting bolts and remove the pulley from the hub.

Remove the thermostat see p. 40.

Disconnect connector from coolant temperature sensor.

Unscrew the coolant temperature sensor.

Unscrew securing bolts -arrows- and remove coolant pump with mounting bracket.

Installation

Clean sealing surfaces of seal residues with a suitable scraper. The sealing surfaces must not be scratched under any circumstances. Clean sealing surfaces from dirt and oil.

Attach the coolant pump with a new seal and tighten the mounting bolts to 10 Nm.

Apply some sealant to the threads of the coolant temperature sensor. screw the sensor in and tighten. Connect the plug connector of the sensor.

Install the thermostat see p. 40.

Attach coolant pump pulley with spring washer and hand-tighten bolt.

Install the V-belt see p. 29.

While holding the V-belt, tighten the belt pulley bolt to 70 Nm.

Connect and secure the coolant hoses with clamps.

Fill in coolant see p. 38.

After the test drive, stop the car in a dry area and check the tightness of the cooling system.
