Removing and installing the coolant pump (Mondeo 1)

If the coolant pump fails, it can only be replaced; the pump cannot be repaired. If the shaft seal is leaky, then when the engine is running, coolant flows down the cylinder block, leaking out of the air bleed hole in the coolant pump drive shaft. The coolant pump in a 4-cylinder gasoline engine is driven by a V-belt; in a diesel engine, the pump is driven by a toothed belt from the camshaft.

Removal



Caution! Since it is necessary to unscrew the right engine support, a crane or jack is required to support the engine.

Unscrew the fastening nuts on the right engine bracket. Remove the bracket.

Unscrew the right engine mount.

4-cylinder petrol engine



Remove the timing belt, see p. 1.3.

Remove the center bolt of the timing belt guide roller near the coolant pump.

Place a suitable container under the coolant pump and collect the leaking fluid.

Remove the hose from the coolant pump pipe, first loosen and slide the fastening clamp.

Remove the four mounting bolts and remove the coolant pump together with the seal.



Diesel engine

Remove the four mounting bolts and remove the coolant pump together with the seal.



Installation



Before installation, clean all sealing surfaces with a scraper from rust and dirt. Do not allow scratches to form on the sealing surfaces.

Gasoline engine

Install the coolant pump "1" with a new seal "2", tighten the mounting bolts to a torque of 30 Nm.

Tighten the timing belt guide roller to 40 Nm.

Connect the hose to the coolant pump outlet and secure it with a clamp.

Install the timing belt, see p. 1.3.

Install the V-belt, see paragraph 1.19.

Diesel engine



Install the coolant pump with a new seal, tighten the mounting bolts to 25 Nm.

Screw on the belt tensioner, compress and install the mounting spring.

Connect the hose to the coolant pump outlet and secure it with a clamp.

Install the timing belt, see p. 1.7.

Install the V-belt, see paragraph 1.19.

All engines

Tighten the right engine mount to 85 Nm.

Screw the right engine bracket with new self-locking nuts. Lower the jack. Tighten the nuts to 90 Nm.

Remove the jack.

Screw the right side expansion tank for the coolant. Connect the hoses and secure them with clamps

Fill with coolant, see p. 3.3.

Warm up the engine. Then park the car on a dry site and check the cooling system for leaks.
