Removing, installing and tensioning the V-belt (Mondeo 1)

The engines are equipped with wide V-belts. Compared to traditional belts, the belts used in the Mondeo have a longer service life, and several units can be driven with one belt. When laying the V-belt, it is necessary to ensure that it is not shifted on all belt pulleys. During regular technical inspections, it is necessary to check the V-belt for wear and defects. If the side surfaces of the belt are frayed, cracks or tears appear on it, then it must be changed.

Replacing the belt

Unscrew the wheel arch trim "1". Unscrew the V-belt protective cover.

Four-cylinder petrol engine

The V-belt drives all auxiliary units. The belt is tensioned automatically by a tension roller. The diagram below shows the location and operation of the belt.







Press the tension roller with a wrench, counteracting the force of the spring - arrow. As a result, the tension is removed from the roller. Remove the V-belt.

To install the V-belt, press the tension roller in the direction indicated by the arrow.

Install and screw on the protective covers.

Diesel engine

The auxiliary units are driven by separate V-belts. The tension of the belts is adjusted using tension bolts.





Alternator V-belt: Loosen the central nut "3" of the tension roller, but do not unscrew it. Loosen the bolt "1" and remove the V-belt.



Place the new V-belt, secure the tension roller with bolt "1".

Check the tension of the V-belt at point "2" between the generator and the crankshaft belt pulley. When pressed with your thumb, a new V-belt should deflect no more than 2 mm. A used V-belt should deflect no more than 4 mm.

Finally, tighten the central bolt of the tension roller "3" to a torque of 24 Nm.

Power steering pump V-belt: Unscrew bolt "1" and remove the cover.



Loosen the oil pump bearing bolt "2" slightly, but do not unscrew it.



Loosen bearing bolts "1" on the power steering pump and "3" on the tensioner, but do not unscrew them. Press bolt "2" and remove the V-belt.

Place the new V-belt and tighten bolt "2". When pressing the V-belt with your thumb, it should bend no more than 1 mm.



Tighten the bearing bolts on the power steering pump and on the tensioner to 25 Nm.

Screw on the belt cover with two bolts.



Air conditioning compressor V-belt: Loosen clamp bolt "1" and remove V-belt "2".

Place the new V-belt and tighten it using bolt "1". When pressing the belt with your thumb, it should bend no more than 2 mm.
