Removing and installing the oil pump (Focus 2)

The oil pump is removed for replacement when its supply decreases, causing a constant drop in oil pressure in the engine lubrication system, as well as when oil leaks through the seal of the mating surfaces of the pump body and cylinder block. Only the pump assembly is supplied as spare parts, therefore this subsection describes only the removal and installation of the pump.

You will need: all the tools necessary to remove the timing belt and engine oil pan, as well as a 10 mm socket head.

1. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.

2. Drain the oil from the engine oil pan (see "Changing engine oil and oil filter").

3. Remove the timing belt (see "Replacing the timing belt").

WARNING: After removing the timing belt, do not rotate the camshaft or crankshaft, as this may damage the valves with the pistons.

4. Remove the crankshaft toothed pulley (Fig. 5.18).

5. Unscrew the four bolts securing the air conditioning compressor (Fig. 5.19) and move the compressor away from the engine without disconnecting the pipes from it.

6. Remove the engine oil pan (see "Replacing the oil pan seal").

7. Unscrew bolt a (Fig. 5.20) securing oil receiver 2 to the oil pump and remove the oil receiver and the gasket installed under its flange.

WARNING: Replace the oil pickup flange gasket with a new one each time it is removed, as a leaky connection may result in a sharp reduction in oil pump flow.

USEFUL TIP: Every time you remove the oil receiver, be sure to wash its mesh from varnish deposits from the oil with gasoline or kerosene.

8. Unscrew the seven bolts (shown by arrows in Fig. 5.20) securing oil pump 1 to the cylinder block and, prying the pump with two screwdrivers, remove it from the mounting bushings in the cylinder block.

9. Remove the sealing gasket installed under the oil pump housing flange.

CAUTION: Replace the oil pump housing gasket with a new one each time the pump is removed.

HELPFUL TIP: Replace the front crankshaft oil seal (see "Replacing the crankshaft seals").

10. Install the pump in the reverse order of removal and tighten its mounting bolts evenly crosswise to a torque of 9 N·m (0.9 kgf·m).

11. Install all previously removed parts and fill the engine with oil.

HELPFUL TIP: When installing a new oil pump, we recommend replacing the oil filter.
