Removing and installing the coolant pump (Escort 5)

Removal


Disconnect the ground wire from the battery. Drain the coolant from the cooling system. Remove the air filter.

Remove the toothed camshaft timing belt. Remove the lower camshaft timing gear cover.

Remove the timing belt tensioner roller. Unscrew the stud from the coolant pump housing. Disconnect the flexible hose from the coolant pump. Remove the coolant pump.

Installation


Caution: When replacing the coolant pump, it is recommended to also install a new timing belt.


Clean the gasket mating surfaces in the engine block and coolant pump housing. Install a new coolant pump gasket. Bolt the coolant pump to the cylinder block without fully tightening the mounting bolts.

Connect the flexible cooling system hose to the coolant pump. Place the white mark on the hose opposite the mark on the pump housing projection. Tighten the coolant pump mounting bolts to the specified torque. Screw the stud into place in the coolant pump housing, lubricating the threads with a small amount of Loctite 242. Install the lower timing belt cover. Install the timing belt tensioner roller and spring. Install the roller so that its spring is compressed as much as possible. Install the timing belt. Install the air filter. Connect the ground wire to the battery.

Fill the cooling system and bleed air from it. Check the tightness of the connections.
