Petrol engines since 9/92
If the fuel pump does not work (no operating noise is heard), check the power supply in the following order: the safety switch in the luggage compartment must be on (vehicles from 9/94), the fuel pump fuse must be OK. The location of the fuses and relays is shown in the following figure.
If no fault is found, the fuel pump must be checked and replaced if necessary.
Turn off the ignition.

Open the engine compartment hood, unfasten and remove the fuse box cover. R17: fuel pump relay; S42: Fuel pump fuse.
Carefully remove the fuel pump relay with an upward movement and replace it with a working relay.

If a new working relay is not available, short-circuit terminals 3 and 5 on the relay base with a thick wire. The fuel pump should start working audibly (if necessary, ask an assistant to listen to the noise of operation near the fuel tank), otherwise the fault lies in the electrical wiring or the pump itself.
At the service station, the fuel pump performance and pressure in the fuel system can be checked, which is done using special devices. About checking the relay see also p. 153.
