Engine oil circulation

5 - oil cooler (if available)

All FORD SCORPIO car engines have a so-called pressure circulation lubrication system. The oil pump sucks oil from the oil pan through the oil receiver and pumps it into the main oil filter. The oil pump has a pressure reducing valve on the pressure side, which opens if the oil pressure is too high, and part of the oil can flow into the oil sump.

Through the central hole of the filter element, the purified oil enters the main oil line. In the main oil line there is a hydraulic switch or an oil pressure sensor, which warns the driver about too low oil pressure via a signaling device or a pressure indicator on the instrument panel. In case of insufficient throughput of the oil filter (when contaminated) the bypass valve directs the crude oil directly into the main line.

Channels for lubricating the crankshaft bearings depart from the main oil line. Through inclined drillings in the crankshaft, oil is directed to the connecting rod bearings.

At the same time, oil is supplied through vertical pipelines to the cylinder head and, depending on the engine, is sent there to lubricate the camshaft bearings, pressure levers, hydraulic tappets and the ends of the valve stems.
