Measuring the final drive clearance

1. Install the bearings on the differential box, maintaining the previous arrangement of the interacting elements.
2. Install new O-rings and new sealing rings (tool 15.076) on the bearing clearance adjustment flange.
3. Lubricate the differential box bearings with the same type of oil as for the rear axle.
4. Install the differential and bearing clearance adjustment flanges and tighten them by hand until the bearings are in place.
5. After performing (by hand) several dozen revolutions of the main gear pinion (to install the tapered bearings of the differential box), the main gear pinion should be adjusted so that the gap is almost not felt.
6. Install the dial indicator holder on the differential box and rest its measuring tip at a right angle against one of the teeth of the driven gear of the main transmission.
7. Tighten the differential box bearing clearance adjustment flange on the driven gear side of the main gear and loosen the bearing clearance adjustment flange located on the opposite side so that the intertooth clearance of the main gear is 0.01 mm.
8. Screw in the bearing clearance adjustment flange from the differential side by 4–5 teeth.
9. Rotate the final drive gear several times and measure the tooth clearance at three locations on the final drive driven gear (approximately every 120°).
10. Install the retainers (from unscrewing) of the bearing clearance adjustment flanges.
11. Install the rear axle housing cover together with a new gasket and identification plate.
