Gear Shift Lever Cable — removal, installation and adjustment (Transit 2)

Removal



1. Move the gear selector lever to the "N" position.

2. With the parking brake applied, jack up the front of the vehicle and support it on jack stands.

3. Release the clips and remove the lower engine soundproofing cover, which consists of two parts.

4. Working under the vehicle, hook and remove the end of the cable from the ball-end stud on the gear shift lever. Remove the retaining ring and separate the cable with the braid from the support bracket (see figure 5.4).

5. Working from the cab side, unscrew the two screws and remove the lower gear selector lever cover. Remove the light bulb socket from the protective cover and peel off the cover.

6. Hook and remove the end of the cable from the ball stud on the gear shift lever. Remove the retaining ring and remove the cable with the sheath (see Figure 5.6).

Installation and adjustment



7. Make sure the gear shift lever is still in the "N" position and reinstall the cable. Secure the cable sheath with a retaining ring and slide the end of the inner cable conductor onto the ball stud.

8. Make sure the gearshift lever is in the "N" position (two teeth on the front stop, and two on the rear).

9. Pass the cable with the sheath through the transmission support bracket and secure the cable sheath with a retaining ring.

10. After loosening the cable adjuster tension bolt at the end of the cable, place the end of the cable onto the ball stud of the gear shift lever and tighten the adjuster screw.

11. Move the gear shift lever through all positions, making sure that the engagement is secure.

12. Install the light bulb holder and gear shift lever cover.

13. Install the lower engine sound deadening cover and lower the vehicle to the ground.
