The vehicle can move forward in the following gears: "D" (fully automatic switching), "1" (driving in low gear), "2" (movement in 1st and 2nd gears) or "3" (movement in 1st, 2nd, 3rd gears). When the lever is in the "P" (Park) position, the inner pawl locks the gearbox. Reverse gear is engaged when the lever is moved to the "R" position.
The automatic transmission includes a three-element torque converter that transmits torque from the engine to the transmission; the torque converter provides continuously variable torque adjustment and also includes a lock-up clutch, which engages when shifting from 3rd to 4th gear. Engaging the lock-up clutch eliminates torque converter slippage, thereby reducing fuel consumption and engine noise.
The planetary gearbox has hydraulic control and engages the gear depending on the driving speed and the position of the gas pedal by means of an internal regulator and control valve. As a result, the correct gearbox operating mode is automatically selected.
The transmission fluid is cooled by a two-pipe oil cooler, which is installed next to the main radiator of the cooling system.
The interlock switch is installed on the gearbox to prevent accidental starting of the engine when the gear shift lever is in any position other than "N" or "P".

Precautionary measures
When the vehicle is parked and left with the engine running, or when any check or adjustment is being made, the parking brake must be applied and the gear selector lever must be moved to the "P" position.
Do not allow the engine speed to rise above normal when idling, when the vehicle is stationary and the gearshift lever is moved to any position other than "P" or "N". If the vehicle needs to be towed, the gearshift lever must be moved to the "N" position, but the vehicle must not be towed at speeds of more than 50 km/ h or over distances of more than 30 miles (50 km). If you are going to go beyond these limits, remove the driveshaft.
