If the gears in your car are sticking or not engaging correctly, for a new car this probably means that the gearshift mechanism is not adjusted correctly (the workshop should adjust it under warranty), and for an older car it may be a sign of wear of the gearshift mechanism (Fig. 12.4). In both cases, the fault can be fixed without much difficulty. Before starting work, check that the gearshift rods are not bent or that the play in the bearings is increased.

SEQUENCE OF WORKS

1. Shift into fourth gear.

2. Raise the vehicle and secure it on supports.

4. To fix the gear shift shaft in the middle position, use a suitable rod 2 (Fig. 12.6) to turn the gearbox shaft back and forth.

5. In this position, press the shift shaft fully into the gearbox.

6. Put the gear shift rod back on the gearbox shaft. First, clean the clamping surfaces from grease and oil.

Fig. 12.7. Using a drill (3) with a diameter of 9 mm to fix the gearshift lever (1) in the housing (2)

7. Move the gear shift lever to the fourth gear position and insert a rod or drill (9 mm) from below into the gear shift lever housing to secure it in the gear shift housing (Fig. 12.7).

8. Tighten the gearshift rod mounting bolt on the gearbox shaft (tightening torque 25 N·m). The gearshift shaft must not turn.

9. Remove the stopper (rod or drill) from the gear shift lever housing.

10. Check the smoothness and ease of gear shifting. If necessary, repeat the gear shift adjustment process.
