Gearboxes B5 and iB5

Raise the front of the vehicle and secure it on stands. On 4-speed transmissions, engage 2nd gear; on 5-speed transmissions, engage 4th gear. Loosen the clamping bolt on the end of the gearshift rod and remove the rod from the gear selector shaft by sliding it away from the gearbox. Move the gear selector shaft back and forth until it finds the center position. Then, turn the shaft left and right until it finds its center position. In this position, insert a suitable rod or screwdriver into the shaft and press the shaft into the gearbox until it stops (see Fig. 7A.2-7A.4).

Caution: Insert the locking pin only from the left side, looking in the direction of travel.

Clean the mating surfaces of the shift rod and the shift shaft from grease, then connect the shift rod to the shaft and tighten the clamp bolt to the specified torque.

Remove the gearshift lock pin and check that each gear is engaged correctly.

Lower the car.

Using a lever, remove the gearshift lever cover from the center console.

Raise the front of the vehicle and secure it on stands. Remove the front wheels. Set the gearshift lever to neutral.

Loosen the shift link clamp bolt located at the rear of the transmission.

Inside the vehicle, loosen the 4 bolts securing the gearshift housing to the body and align the housing. This is especially important if the adjustment is made after the transmission has been removed and installed. Retighten the bolts.

Install Ford special tool 16-064 on the gearshift lever in neutral and position it in the recess in the lever. Rotate the tool clockwise to move it to the lever lock in neutral. Do not move the gearshift lever or the special tool during the adjustment.

Check that the front of the shift rod is in the neutral position. Check that the adjusting special tool is correctly positioned on the transmission control lever, then tighten the clamp bolt on the shift rod.

Remove the special adjustment tool from the gearshift lever. Lower the vehicle and install the gearshift lever boot.
