Removal
The transmission is removed downward from the engine bay after being disconnected from the engine. Use a suitable hoist to support the weight of the transmission. Use a winch to support the weight of the engine while removing the transmission. Remove the negative battery terminal. Remove the hood.
Remove the air filter and engine air supply system components. Remove the clutch cable from the clutch release lever.
Disconnect the connector from the reverse light switch on the transmission.
Unscrew the upper bolts securing the gearbox to the engine, the ground busbars and the hose mounting brackets (see Fig. 7A.27).
Remove the bolt securing the ground bus to the top of the gearbox.
Disconnect the connector from the vehicle speed sensor. Disconnect the connector from the oxygen sensor.
Unscrew and remove the upper starter mounting bolt.
Raise the front of the vehicle and secure it on stands. Remove the front wheels. Unscrew the nuts on both sides of the vehicle and disconnect the anti-roll bar from the control arms. Unscrew the nuts securing the ball joints of the steering rods to the steering knuckles. Remove the ball joints from the steering knuckles. Unscrew the fastening and remove the transverse arms. When removing the ball joints, be careful not to damage the protective rubber boot.
Place a suitable container under the gearbox and, by unscrewing the drain plug, drain the oil from the gearbox. Screw the drain plug back in place.
Remove the right drive shaft from the gearbox. To do this, insert a pry bar or screwdriver between the inner constant velocity joint (CV joint) and the housing and, while an assistant pulls the car wheel outward, knock the drive shaft out of engagement in the differential axle gear with a strong, sharp blow to the end of the pry bar.
Using soft wire, hang the inner end of the drive shaft from the steering rod.
Remove the left drive shaft from the gearbox in the same manner.
Remove the bolts and disconnect the catalytic converter from the rear of the exhaust system.
Unscrew 2 nuts and disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold. Remove the catalytic converter.
Remove the starter.
Remove the clamp bolt securing the gear shift rod to the gear shift shaft at the rear of the transmission.
Mark the position of the front and rear sections of the shift rod, loosen the clamp bolt and remove the rod from the shaft at the rear of the transmission.
Remove the bolt and disconnect the shift support rod from the mount at the rear of the transmission.
Place a jack under the engine and raise it enough so that the weight of the engine is supported by the jack.
Remove the bolts and disconnect the front left suspension from the body.
Disconnect the connector from the crankshaft angle sensor and unscrew the air pulsation system filter housing (see Fig. 7A.28).
Disconnect the speedometer drive cable from the vehicle speed sensor.
Unscrew the bolts securing the left rear powertrain suspension.
Lower the engine together with the gearbox, unscrew the 6 bolts securing the left suspensions to the gearbox. Remove both suspensions (see Fig. 7A.29).
Recheck that the engine is securely supported by the jack.
Unscrew the remaining bolts securing the gearbox flange to the engine (see Fig. 7A.30).
Lift the gearbox slightly by hand, move it away from the engine until the splines of the driven disk hub disengage from the input shaft, then lower it and remove the gearbox from under the engine.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following points:
- check that the mating surfaces are clean;
- lubricate the splined portion of the gearbox input shaft and the release bearing guide sleeve with a thin, even layer of special grease;
- when installing drive shafts into the gearbox, use new retaining rings;
- check that the powertrain hangers are in place and pre-tighten the mounting bolts. Lower the powertrain completely and tighten the bolts completely;
- install the wishbones and connect the steering rods;
- when connecting the catalytic converter to the exhaust system, use a new gasket;
- connect and adjust the gear shift rod if necessary;
- fill the gearbox with oil.
