Suspension condition check

Checking the front suspension

1. Raise the front of the car and secure it on stands.

2. On vehicles with power steering, check the condition of the hoses and their connections.

3. Shake the wheel in the vertical and horizontal planes to determine the play. If there is a backlash, determine its source.

4. Continue pumping the wheel while the assistant applies the foot brake. If the play disappears or decreases significantly, it is likely that the hub bearings are worn. If the play does not change when the brake pedal is pressed, then there is wear in the suspension elements.

5. If there is play in the horizontal plane, wear of the tie rod ball joints is possible.

Checking the rear suspension

6. Raise the rear of the car and secure it on stands.

7. Check the condition of the protective covers of the constant velocity joints.

8. Check bearings, suspension bushings and shock absorber mounting for wear. Wear control in the hub bearings is performed by shaking the raised wheel.

9. Check shock absorbers for shock absorber fluid leaks.

10. Place the car on the ground, and by pressing on the body and releasing it sharply, check the operation of the shock absorbers. With normally working shock absorbers, the car should swing only once, otherwise it is necessary to check the condition of the shock absorbers on the stand, and replace if necessary.
