Checking the ignition coil

            0

You will need a tester or ohmmeter.

On vehicles with a 1.6L Duratec Ti-VCT engine, perform the following steps.

1. Disconnect a wire from the minus plug of the storage battery.

2. Remove the decorative engine cover (see Removal and installation of a decorative casing of the engine).

3. Disconnect the high-voltage wires from the ignition coil leads..

4.... and measure the resistance of the secondary winding by connecting an ohmmeter to the terminals of the 2nd and 3rd cylinders. The resistance should be 8.0-9.0 kOhm.

5. Repeat check for conclusions of 1st and 4th cylinders.

6. If the resistance of at least one of the secondary windings is different from the specified, replace the ignition coil (see Removal and installation of the ignition coil of the 1.6 l duratec ti-vct engine).

7. Reconnect the high voltage wires and install the filter.

NOTE: Lubricate the high voltage wire lugs with grease such as petroleum jelly before installation.

On vehicles with Duratec-HE and Duratec-V15 engines, only the primary resistance of the ignition coil can be checked. To do this, disconnect the wiring harness block from the ignition coil and connect an ohmmeter to the primary winding terminals on the coil connector. The resistance should be about 0.5 ohm. Otherwise, replace the ignition coil.
