For vehicles with a 1.6L Duratec Ti-VCT engine, perform the following steps.
1. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Remove the decorative engine cover (see Removing and installing the decorative engine cover).

3. Disconnect the high-voltage wires from the ignition coil terminals…

4….and measure the resistance of the secondary winding by connecting an ohmmeter to the terminals of the 2nd and 3rd cylinders. The resistance should be 8.0–9.0 kOhm.

5. Repeat the check for terminals of cylinders 1 and 4.
6. If the resistance of at least one of the secondary windings differs from the specified value, replace the ignition coil (see Removing and installing the ignition coil of the 1.6L Duratec TI-VCT engine).
7. Reconnect the high-voltage wires and install the filter.

NOTE: Before installation, lubricate the high-voltage wire terminals with a grease such as petroleum jelly.

On vehicles with Duratec-HE and Duratec-V15 engines, you can only check the resistance of the primary winding of the ignition coil. To do this, disconnect the wiring harness connector from the ignition coil and connect an ohmmeter to the primary winding terminals on the coil connector. The resistance should be about 0.5 ohms. Otherwise, replace the ignition coil.
