Replacement and maintenance of spark plugs

            0

The manufacturer installs Motorcraft AYFS22C spark plugs on the 1.6 L Duratec engine, Motorcraft AYFS22IPJ spark plugs on the 2.0 and 2.3 L Duratec-HE engines, Motorcraft AGFS plugs on the 2.5 L Duratec-V15 engine 22CM1 (copper electrodes) or AGFS 22FE13J (platinum electrodes). DENCO T16VR-U10 or DENCO PT16VR13 spark plugs can be used as substitutes on all of these engines. The gap between the electrodes of the candles is 1.3 mm.

You will need a special "16" wrench to remove the spark plugs (with rubber bushing to hold the spark plug).

On vehicles with a 1.6L Duratec engine, perform the following steps.

1. Remove the decorative engine cover (see Removal and installation of a decorative casing of the engine).

2. Remove tips of high-voltage wires from spark plugs.

3. Blow out the spark plug wells with compressed air to prevent dirt from entering the engine cylinders when removing the spark plugs.

4. Remove spark plug..

5….and remove it from the spark plug well.

NOTE: Inspect the spark plug and evaluate its condition by appearance.

6. Use a round feeler gauge to check the gap between the electrodes of the spark plug. It should be 1.3 mm.

7. If the gap differs from the specified value, adjust it by bending the side electrode.

WARNING: Adjust the gap only by bending the ground electrode. Any bending of the center electrode will break the spark plug insulator.

8. In a similar way, remove and check the remaining spark plugs.

9. When installing spark plugs, screw them in first by hand (wrench without collar), and then tighten with a wrench.

On a vehicle with 2.0L and 2.3L Duratec-HE and 2.5L Duratec-V15 engines, perform the following steps.

NOTE: Although the head of the Duratec-V15 engine is slightly different from the design of the Duratec-HE engines, the spark plugs of all three of these engines are replaced by similar techniques.

1. Remove the decorative engine cover (see Removal and installation of a decorative casing of the engine).

2. Remove ignition coils (see Removing and installing ignition coils for duratec-he and duratec-v15 engines).

3. Blow out the spark plug wells with compressed air to prevent dirt from entering the engine cylinders when removing the spark plugs.

4. Turn out spark plugs and take them from candle wells.

5. Check the spark plugs and adjust the gap between the electrodes in the same way as described above for the 1.6 l Duratec engine (see paragraphs. 6 and 7).

6. When installing spark plugs, screw them in first by hand (wrench without collar), and then tighten with a wrench.
