The Ford Focus II starter is a four-pole, four-brush DC motor with permanent magnet excitation, combined with a planetary gear and an electromagnetic two-winding traction relay. The covers and the stator housing are tightened with two bolts. Permanent magnets are fixed in the stator housing. The rotation from the armature shaft of the electric motor is transmitted to the drive shaft through the planetary gear. A freewheel roller clutch is installed on the drive shaft.

When you turn the key in the switch (castle) ignition to position «III» voltage from the battery is applied to the retracting and holding windings of the traction relay, as a result, the drive lever moves and the starter gear engages with the ring gear of the engine flywheel. At the same time, the armature of the traction relay closes the power contacts (at this moment, the retracting winding is turned off), and the starter motor is powered by the battery. The starter armature rotates the engine crankshaft through the planetary gear. After starting the engine, when the gear speed exceeds the speed of the starter shaft, the freewheel is released and slips, thereby protecting the starter from high speed and damage.

USEFUL ADVICE: In order to avoid many starter malfunctions, follow a number of simple rules when operating it.

USEFUL ADVICE: When starting the engine, turn on the starter for no more than 10-15 seconds and again - after 20-30 seconds. Continuous operation of the starter for a long time may cause overheating. If after three attempts the engine does not start, check and eliminate malfunctions in the engine power supply or ignition system.

GOOD ADVICE: After starting the engine, turn off the starter immediately, as prolonged rotation of the drive gear flywheel can cause the starter overrunning clutch to seize.

USEFUL ADVICE: It is not allowed to move the car using the starter. This causes significant overload and damage to it.
