Checking the brake booster

Brake system TEVES MK IV

The brake booster must be checked if an unusually high force must be applied to the brake pedal to achieve sufficient braking action.

Start the engine and depress the brake pedal. Stop the engine while pressing the pedal. Hold the pedal down for about 30 seconds. If during this time the pedal travel does not change, then the brake booster is in order.

With the engine off, depress the brake pedal strongly at least 5 times, then start the engine with the pedal depressed. The brake pedal should now feel good under your foot. This means that the brake booster is functioning correctly. Otherwise, the amplifier should be tested for leaks.

To check, unscrew the vacuum hose at the brake booster and start the engine. Place your finger on the end of the vacuum hose to check if a vacuum is being created.

If there is no vacuum, check vacuum hose for leaks and damage, replace hose if necessary. Tighten all clamps securely.

If vacuum is present: measure vacuum, replace brake booster if necessary (service station work).

Caution: When doing so, always replace the non-return valve in the vacuum line, as If the non-return valve is defective, fuel vapors entering can damage the brake booster diaphragm.
