Steering gear

Disassembly
1. Disconnect the ball joint ends from the steering rods after loosening the lock nuts.
2. Remove the clamps securing the casings and move aside the protective casings of the steering gear housing.
3. Move the toothed rack to the left until it stops and clamp it in a vice with soft jaws.
4. Using the appropriate wrench, unscrew the steering rods from the toothed rack.
5. Remove the rack stop cap using adjusting mandrel 13.009, remove the spring and rack stop.
6. Remove the steering gear drive pinion cover together with its gasket.
7. Remove the bearing from the steering gear drive shaft.
8. Remove the toothed rack from the transmission housing.
9. Remove the nylon guide ring from the right side of the steering gear housing.
Assembly
1. Clean and check the technical condition of all parts; replace worn or damaged parts.
2. Insert the nylon guide ring into the housing from the right side of the steering gear housing.
3. Attach the toothed rack to the steering gear housing and set the rack in the middle position.
4. Install the drive pinion into the steering gear housing together with the bearing.
5. Install the stop and spring into the steering gear housing.
6. Install the protective cap of the rack stop onto the sealant, tighten it to a torque of 40–50 Nm, and then unscrew it at an angle of 65°.
7. Using a dynamometer, check the moment of resistance when turning the steering gear drive pinion.
8. Move the toothed rack in the housing to the left until it stops and clamp it in a vice with soft jaws.
9. Connect the steering rods to the toothed rack and put on the protective covers of the transmission housing.
10. Install new housing mounting clamps.
11. Connect the ends with ball joints to the steering rods and secure them from unscrewing.
